I think the Smart makes sense in European cities where they can be parked at a right angle to the curb legally in 800 year old cites that grew around cart tracks. Cart like in horse drawn. They are explicitly urban cars. A neighbor has one and while it is cool to look at, It has a terrible shape in terms of areo (which the epa figures reflect) and really does not make sense in Portland Or. It don't doubt that for your application where you live it would be useful. For me in my open west secondary and freeway centric driving environment an early 90's civic vx or 96-00 civic hx is a "greener" car for a fraction of the cost.

I think so.

I think the Smart fills a niche that just doesn't apply to me. But if I lived in (not near) a city and needed something to mostly dink around town in, it'd be on my list. At least if I could find a cheap used one because I'm generally a cheap bastard when it comes to cars.

There are a few of them up here way in the middle of nowhere, and I just don't get it in this setting.

Back to the Jag for a second. I have had thoughts of putting the "go fast bits" from the Noble M12 into an X type. I think the 2.5 in those is the same one that is in the Noble.

Vehicross=looks cool. But hey, why wasn't the ford contour on the list??? My 2000 svt was a piece of crap quality wise, fun car when it ran though. I guess the jag is a cousin so I guess I am represented...

I think the practicality of the smart car is on par with a scooter, but with protection from the elements

Having spent a week behind the wheel of an Echo.. I too think it belongs firmly on that list.

I am considering getting a used smart for my daily commute of 12 miles all back roads.
