On second thought, I know how you feel. A year ago my wife's civic was on it's way out and we where looking for a car for her. I tried to put her in a 'rolla, she wanted a 3800 Grand Am coupe. Coming from a '91 civic, she thought a newer corolla was too small Knowing she "cried" her way out of several 100MPH+ tickets in a civic, I refused to put her smaller car with a 3800. We lucked out on an Accord coupe at $3k under KBB because it had been sitting on the lot for a month or 2.

Good luck.

Get her a nice P71.

Speaking of which, that wouldn't happen to be black interior in that totaled Lincoln, would it? :vulture:

Nah, it's not all that bad. There's a reason we keep each other around. She may be irrational, but I still love her.

I'm guessing anything with a nice leather interior would fit the bill nicely. That seems to be what most people want.

what's wrong with a town car? they were classy vehicles when new.. and they still are pretty elegant in a waterbed on wheels kinda way

You work at a euro parts dealer, right? I know you have a 944, but shouldn't you be trying a bit harder to keep up appearances? There are a number of fine late model european luxobarges that can be procured for your stated $5800 (yes, I know I didn't say they cost $5800). E38, early V70/S60, A6, S80...

I can't get over how cheaply you can buy an early S80. I saw a decent looking high mileage '01 on autotrader for under 2 grand the other day. They're still a fairly modern looking car too, the same body style was in production through 2006.

The GS400 would be an awesome car and is ridiculously fast. The GS300 is quick enough and a lot easier to work on. You can get a nice one for $5800 with some hunting, as my recent daily driver for wifey search proved. She loves the car, both how it looks and how it drives. I have to admit it's a much better car than I expected - tight, smooth, and much sportier than my LS400. Compared to my Volvo 850 it's a freakin' bank vault. ("The 850 is prone to rattling" is an understatement.)

Compared to anything European I think it will be far less troublesome.

V70 or GS400 out of that list by a landslide.

I'm voting GS400. For $5800, you'd get a NICE one, and they will run forever. Hell, if i had $5800 to spend on a car TODAY, it would probably be a Lexus LS, GS, or SC.

Lexus LS400, you can get a really clean earlier car for that money...and its way more car than a town car

Last of the XJ6s (X300). From all my research they have very few problem spots (unlike the first of the XJ8s) and for $5800 you should be able to find a nice one.

When looking at Lexus, look at the slow selling and quickly depreciating Infiniti products as well.

Yep, I'm voting for a really nice E36 (rather than steching to find an E46 or E39, $5k will buy a nice E36) or Lexus GS300. Maxima maybe?

You can also add late ('94) XJ40s to that. $5800 even buys you an XJ81 (V12) if you can stomach the fuel bill.

I like the way you think. But you're not going to get a later Sport, as pictured, for that money. A good one will still run to $10k plus. For $5800, you're looking at a nice pre facelift car like mine (up to '99) or a kind of tired post facelift ('99-01).

I've actually been finding '00 Sport package cars in that price range lately. They're admittedly all higher mileage examples, but there still seem to be some clean ones in the ~130K range for about $6000.

I don't like BMWs and haven't particularly enjoyed working on any of the ones that I've touched; I'd still buy that car.

Have you actually looked at the Jags or are you just repeating the same BS that all Jags are unreliable?

The V12s are great. It's the 6.0L. If I were doing it again, I honestly wouldn't bother with anything but an X300 XJ6R or a short wheelbase XJ12 - so either an XJ81 or '95 X305.

90s Jaguar are no different than anything else that cost that much money when new. Don't buy one that has a decade's worth of deferred basic maintainence and you'll have a good experience with it.
