We got rid of that pesky steering wheel....and replaced it with two steering wheels. I can't imagine why this didn't catch on. Gotta at least give them some credit for trying something new.

Not as stupid as the Ford Predicta which was steered by a big lever in the center console, which the driver moved forwards and backwards.

Promising TONS of feedback I'm sure!

Have you ever driven a car like that? Feedback is pretty much limited to sight and sound.

Saab did a fly by wire stick in 1992, spooky but nice once you got used to it. Another benefit is not getting impaled by a steering column.

And not a whole lot of sound.

i kind of like it... the worst thing for me on long drives is fitting my mits around the steering wheel comfortably...

Given that modern cars have negative feedback, meaning not only did they completely kill steering feel, but they added artificial "feel" that doesn't have much to do with what the tires are doing, maybe the time has come again?

It's a safety feature! You won't have to worry about having your arms crossed up over the airbag when you crash. (Crashing is assumed. You're expected to just plow into whatever is in front of you)

Let's just replace one of the wrist twisters with a smart phone cradle, then we'll really have something.

I remember reading about that in Popular Mechanics or Popular Science back when it was introduced. I think GM was working on something similar. The auto makers also played around with joysticks for a while back in that time period.

I want my next vehicle to be tracked and to be steered with left and right throttles. (And weigh 22 tons with twin 50cal).

I think that is what next year's Escalade will be.

That seems completely plausible, given the overboosted power steering systems of the 60s. I had a 65 Mustang and a 67 Plymouth that had power steering and I could steer them with one finger. I often did.
