The LKQ in Durham, NC recently announced they're converting their retail yard into a self-serve yard over the next few months! I'm so excited!
Now I'll have two self-serves in the area! They're within 30 miles of each other too.

According to the press release, they are trying to make them all self-serve. Currently only 34 are.
Edit: The article said 34 but the LKQ Self Serve site says 47. http://www.lkqselfserve.com/
3 hour drive from me. i still haven't been to the pull-a-part right here in charlotte. i'm slippin'.

They just opened one in Greenville, SC too.
I used to regularly go from Concord to Durham in like 90 minutes.
Very very cool! I'm nowhere near that but it sounds like my predicted near future demise of the self service yards is proving to be false.

Nope... they undercut the full service yard's prices by too much, and the kind of people that look for parts at a junkyard are USUALLY the same people that don't mind getting dirty and saving money.
Our full service yards around here are on dire straights, and we now have TWO gigantic self-serve yards within 20 minutes of each other.
Several of the local LKQs were sold recently. My favorite one for self serve Subie parts (in Damascus) is no longer self serve...I was bummed when I heard that. The one that is closest to my house that used to be an LKQ is now a Pick-n-Pull and has gone downhill rapidly. It's a very convenient location for me, but I'm looking for a new place to pull parts after the way things are going. I liked things a lot more around here when the LKQ self serves were LKQs and self serves!

PS...my favorite self serve yards to date are the one on the east side of Spokane (huge, right next to I-90, can't miss it) and the Parts Galore in Warren, MI. If you live near these locations and haven't been, do yourself a favor; make a shopping list and go shopping.

Hmm. There is an LKQ not too far from me... I have never been to a junkyard. I'm not even sure how to find a self-service yard.

POD-PERSON!!!!!
@Carson -- Which LKQ in Durham? The one on Hwy70? I thought the only LKQ around was in Garner. The only one showing up is the one in Garner. Hopefully it'll be close to me so I can have someplace new to go during lunch since I work in Durham.

They bought the City Auto Salvage on S. Miami Blvd. So, yep, both are on 70 now. I'm having trouble finding the link but if you poke around on WRAL.com long enough you'll come across it. They said they will stock over the next few months then open as a self serve.

Yeah, I know, it's kind of disturbing, huh? What usually happens is something like this: Something needs replacing. I check the appropriate vehicle forum, club, CL, or eBay. One of the following happens:
b. I don't find a part and I live with it broken.
iii. (Typically what happens) I trade for, or sell and buy, another car, thus removing the need for the new part. I've gotten and then gotten rid of cars in the span between typical oil changes. RX7 needs brakes? Eh, why buy brakes when I can get my money back out of it and buy a Spitfire. 3 months later: Spitfire needs a clutch? Eh, I can get my money back out it it. I think I'll buy an E30. And so on, and so on.
