In today’s collector car world, early production cars are often seen as a bit special. They’re the ones that, all these years later, are viewed as extra-special.

So maybe this is a glimpse at a future collector item: A friend of ours is selling a very early Miata.

At first blush this seems to be an ordinary used …

Not special to me but I am sure someone will overpay for it at some point.

It's held onto that white paint pretty well, considering the age.

David,

Thank you for the mention!

I fully recognize that not everyone is into early Miatas for display purposes so the population of people who may be interested in buying it is small.  I am downsizing so this is the car I picked to sell (not an easy choice for sure).

Everyone that has seen 00064 in person ogles over it so even if someone may not want to own it there is still a lot of appreciation for it.  Hopefully there is a new owner for her when the auction ends.

If anyone has questions feel free to reach out.

R

So what's the deal with the build date being before the start of retail production? Does that mean this car was build for the press to review or something?

It's all explained on the site.  https://sites.google.com/site/miata00508/

and this specific page for the car  https://sites.google.com/site/miata00508/home/miata00064

If you know manufacturing this car is a "first article" car.  There were 8 total made with Mazda owning the first 4 as released to MANA. This car was presumably (from all the paint pen markings on the car) used for assembly line training in Japan and then released to the MANA press fleet for dealership promotion, it was assigned to a dealer in Colorado in April 89 to display in their showroom before the official retail release in July 89.

There are only 7 known earlier cars than this in the US and Mazda owns 4.

Is Saturday afternoon a bad time for an auction to end?
