Your Fleet Number of Cars vs Number of Manufacturers

Including what I inherited, I have Ford at 6, 2 chevys, and one studebaker.

I'm trying to do that math, now.  Either you have an E30 M3 or a four cylinder BMW with ITBs and your Chevy is an unthrottled Diesel, or you have an E46 M3 and your Chevy has a twin throttle TBI.

CLEARLY it has to be the former, since that is the only way to add up to seven turbos assuming that the one pulling double-duty is the Audi.  (Mazda made twin turbo engines, but they had five throttle plates, or three if you removed the cold start ones)

Having sold my BMW, I'm appearing quite consolidated.

Ford:  3  (Mustang, Lightning, soulless company Fusion)

VW: 1 (wife's Sportwagen)

Triumph m/c's:  2  (Bonneville, Tiger 800)

Royal Enfield m/c's:  2  (Bullet 500, Interceptor 750)

I intend to add another Ford to the fleet once I find the right one (1960s).

Ford, Dodge, Oldsmobile... Mazda.

Each of the big three are represented here.

I made at least one error in the counting, possibly more. :)

- I thought the FD only had 3 throttle plates?  There's only three visible when you take the intake piping off, where are the other two?  2 turbos on here.

- CX-9 has 1 turbo, 1 throttle

- Miata has 1 turbo (aftermarket), 1 throttle

- Chevy is a diesel with a turbo and AFAIK 0 throttles.  Unless I'm wrong and they stuck a throttle on it?  It's an LBZ.

- Audi has 2 turbos, 2 throttle plates (this is the one I know I miscounted)

- BMW is an E46 M3, 6 throttle plates, no turbos.

At one point in my life this list would have been a similar number of cars but exclusively Fords. I've branched out...a lot.

Unless the double throttle delete has been done, the FD has five throttle plates!  There are two thermostatically-controlled throttle plates in front of the secondary throttle plates, to prevent air from flowing through them until the engine has warmed up.  Mazda's been doing that weirdness since 1985 with the first FCs.

Huh, wacky, I did not know that!

Hypothetically even with 5 on the FD it could have been equal if the BMW was an E9x M3 (or E39 M5) and the Audi had been a B5 S4 (2 turbos, 1 throttle).

Is okay, Mazda is weird!  If you would like to be a grandmaster pedant, the double throttle is more like a choke than a throttle plate.

Yeah, it's kinda like the VTCS butterflies in an NB2 Miata.

Sunday I sold one of my F150s and tomorrow I am selling one of my Pilots. This will leave me with 20 cars and 7 manufacturers.

1 Ford (keeping long term)

1 Chrysler (selling soon)

1 Toyota (selling soon)

1 GMC (may sell)

1 Pontiac (probably selling soon)

3 Hondas (keeping long term)

12 Buicks ( probably selling like half soonish)

Ideally, want to get down to 8 cars /3 manufacturers long term and rotating through 1-2 random cars at a time so that I do not exceed 10 cars at any given time. Or win the mega millions and buy at least one car from each manufacturer...

Yes, I have had a slight car-buying problem the last couple years. 4 yrs ago I had 4 cars/3 manufacturers.

Definitely two Fords, one MG. The 2002 is the only BMW.

I'm going to go with what's on the badges and say five manufacturers for six cars.

And sulk about not having any motorcycle math to do.

Thinking about it over my lifetime, I've had more Fords than any other brand and 2021 looks to be the first full year since I was 15 that I won't own a FoMoCo product.
