I'm gonna go look at a 86 Yugo GV in the near future, where do these cars like to rust? Anything else to look for other than normal used car type stuff (check fluids, clutch, steering play, shocks, etc.)?

They usually rust bad in the rear wheel wells and strut towers.
Find out when the timing belt was changed last.
The car in question also has a stuck rear hatch, making it a fun job checking for rust in the rear. Any suggestions about that?
Also check the rear hatch. Mine is rusted there along the lip as well as the strut towers and the floorboards.

If the rear hatch is stuck, I would guess there is rust around the rear strut towers.

They aren't choosy, they'll rust anywhere, your garage, your driveway, a field.... Honestly though I've owned 3, northeast sourced Yugos. One was in a junkyard and the other 2 were sitting in a field behind a garage and none of them were rusted. Just lucky I guess

TIMING BELT TIMING BELT TIMING BELT. Its an interference motor. If its been sitting and/or the belt hasnt been changed recently (and the only recent change I trust is the one I've done or watched being done in front of me) Change the belt and tensioner at the same time or you'll be doing the job again in a few weeks.

I wish it were still the case....free/cheap Yugos are quickly becoming a thing of the past.
Of the 3 I mentioned above, all from about 7 years ago, the junkyard car was $100 and ran and drove, the other 2 were giveaways.
Now if I can even find one its usually $500-$800 for a non runner and $1000+ for anything that runs. And then there's the cabrios, $10,000 and up most of the time they come on the market.

Sweet mother of god.....If I had the money I'd own them all. Under the dust that cabrio looks pretty sweet.
I wonder if he wants a Wartburg...and a miata, and a motorcycle

There's a seller on ebay that usually has reproductions.
