Best first bike? The one you don't care about dropping. Another good point for a starter bike? Light weight. Make sure you can pick it up on your own. Cheap repairs are also nice. You can also sell learning appliances, read as small motorcycles everyone wants to learn to ride on, pretty quickly and easily if they're in good shape.

Some safety advice? Always leave yourself an out. Especially at the stoplight. My personal rules at lights were: ~ Stop with the front wheel pointing towards your escape route. ~ Sit at the light with the clutch in and in gear so you can whip out the clutch and roll if you have to. ~ Always watch your mirrors and sides while waiting at a stop. Do not day dream!

I was paranoid of being rear ended at stops because I knew some guys who were killed that way. I thought I had pretty good road presence and attentiveness. It was at stops I felt most at risk.

Take the MSF course. Just do it. I rode for a year and was constantly wondering "Am I doing this right?" The MSF course teaches you the right way to ride.
