Broken ribs after 50 aren't very fun. It's been a week and they still rattle and move around.

You know what they make me miss the most? Blowing my nose. Oh for the love of a good blow!

Even with permission to pick (which really is the only choice), it just doesn't work well. Especially with that pesky booker rattling around behind your eyeballs, well beyond your deepest digs.

Sigh, I just want to blow my nose!

Ps. I feel better right now. Course, it's after my second nap.

Big day today, I stayed up all day, and the bike came home!

There is almost no damage to the bike, furthering the mystery of what happened. Only damage is on the left side. Clutch lever is scarred, and it and the switch housing were shoved along the handlebar. Little Spitfire windscreen has a few scratches. Left rear turn signal is slightly bent. That is all either I or my son could see.

So what happened? Dunno. May not ever know. The guy who brought the bike home wasn't the one to ride it out, so he doesn't know exactly where I was. He did think the general area had a lot of large loose rocks.

My rough guess, I slipped or caught a rut just right, dumped to the left and went sailing when I did. And dove face first into a big rock, perhaps with a second rock to slam my chest into. All in all, probably not all that fast a crash either.

Did loose my gloves and elbow pads. Ah well. Do have the gps back. Hopefully when it's charged up I'll be able to go back and look at the site.

Today has been a very good day. I've felt bright throughout almost all of it. I know, take it easy, don't get stupid. I'm rarring to get stupid, but I'll keep it slow and gentle, in spite of myself. Which means I won't go on that tubing ride we were planning next weekend. Sigh....

I have a hard time sitting on the couch, and I know it's got to feel like an eternity, but from out here it's awesome to see how quickly and positively things have been progressing.

I guess healing up is not entirely unlike cornering: take it easy early to get a good drive out

Sneezing is a curse!

Think I managed to undo the slow healing of the uppermost broken rib last night with a stealthy ninja sneeze. Found myself looking for the OxyContin (sp), that the wife had just dumped. Sigh.

Still hurts this morning.

My veterinarian/aunt called to tease me the other night. "Ha ha, your fifty and going to heal a lot slower now". Dang is she right. These ribs are still rattling. The down low, one high and front, one on the back.

Stuff still doesn't transfer well to long term memory, or whatever. I'll go get the mail, and an hour later have no idea if I went and got the mail. So out to the empty box I go, sometimes several times. Going to have to use a notepad in my pocket to keep track of things.

Well that didn't go as expected. Two doctors visits. Instead of congratulations for how well I'm doing I got grounded. Hard. They gave mt wife a prescription forbidding me from driving and from goi g in to work even part time. I was so uoset I took a nap when I got home. They went balistic when she told them she caught me on the riding mower. Considering how that made me feel the next two days though...

Sigh. I hate waiting around while I heal. I feel good enough to get into trouble!

I'm full of suggestions for getting in trouble!

1) Next visit to the docs, put a small wrench in your pocket to screw with them. Refuse to confirm or deny that you've been working on the car.

2) If they confine you to bed, ask if that includes a prescription for pr0n

[BTW, really glad you're up, alert, and typing well.]

best of luck, concussions are a bitch. I feel like mine is still with me a couple years later disguised as a permanently E36 M3ty memory=/

Best of luck and a speedy recovery to you, try to have some (safe, semi-doctor-approved) fun!

Yes, not doing the things you want to in order to heal can be incredibly frustrating at times.

Sorry for the delay, I've been away for a bit (suffering on the beach).

As for what they say, kinda depends on which doctor you talk to.

Ribs

Some say there's nothing other than bruising, others think there's fracturing where the bone and the cartilage join. Doesn't show on the CT scan (which are really cool to look at btw). This is healing nicely, I can sneeze safely.

Only thing weird is the intermittent feeling of a cinderblock on my chest, stood on the pointy end, right over my heart. The trauma doctors are the only ones worried about this. It's really faded in the past few days though.

Lung

Didn't know this until Friday, but my left lung was/is partially collapsed and pulled away from the rib wall. Term starts with an A, but I forget the word. That is what creates that funny bubbling I can get when I breath deeply. Very much faded away.

Brain

Concussion. Ms. Foxtrapper saw the initial reports, and it described unconsciousness and amnesia. Unspecified time, but it couldn't have been more than a few hours. I crashed at ~9:00 am, and I have memories of events starting at about 2:00 pm.

All the doctors think I was a fool for trying to mow the lawn on the riding mower, and weren't surprised that I set myself back with all the joggling. The trauma doctor and PA were the most, um, bellicose about it. That's apparently why I got the no driving orders. As well bosses at work and Ms Foxtrapper who say I keep fogging far more than I realize (12 year old son insists I've become a horrible fool). Don't understand how exactly, but they've pretty much all insisted I can put myself back into the hospital if I insist on being stupid about activity.

No specific terms that I can recall, just that the healing takes lots of time, and I can't push myself with jiggly activity, or too much mental activity. If I do, I'll backslide. Which I keep managing to re-verify. The mental fog hits with no warning, and can clear sometimes very suddenly (even almost painfully). Either way, after a day of what feels like low activity, I can easily sleep 10-15 hours, plus a nap or two.
