I know we had a guy on here who worked at a Harley Davidson shop. Questions about sportsters and their worth and if there are any deals here in the winter...

I think you're looking for fsp_zx2 or something like that. 99% sure he works at HD due to the defensive nature he gets when most of us bash HD....
He wasn't the one who got his knickers all in a knot over Dr. Hess knowing a thing or two about Evo and earlier Harleys, was he?
I am guilty as charged ... yes, I work at House of Harley in Milwaukee. Mrs. RealMiniDriver also works at a different dealer in the Milwaukee area...and RMD is a devout H-D owner/rider...and is pretty vocal at defending the brand.
I am more of a Buell rider, but the Motor Co stuff pays the bills.
If you prefer, ypu can contact me at work: HOHD Directory. My email and direct phone is posted in the diectory (link); see sales, Erik.

We just had the new bike show in my area.
I'm pretty sold on the new Guzzi V7 but H-D seems to have their pricing all sorted out this year. Their bikes seem more affordable across the whole range.
I think they've figured out that nobody wants to spend luxury car money on a toy they use 9 months of the year.
That, and if their price is too high, all the other bike manufacturers build a Harley too.

Kinda has something to do with grinding HD parts, eh.
There was some iron head sportster guy that got his panties in a wad. The Evo sportster is a fantastic bike, and winter is the time to buy.
Sorry guys for keeping you on edge... school/work/2nd work has been kickin me around a lot lately...
What the best year for the sportsters? (recall rubber mounts being added...EFI?)
Best/ cheapest way to add a fatttt front tire? (ala 48) Hear you can swap over a wide glide front end? Easy or pain in the butt?
In reply to CarKid1989:
I ride with a guy who has an '83 FXR.
His has a shovelhead but they got the EVO in 84-ish.
It's light, has plenty of power, handles well and won't shake your fillings loose.
Probably explains why most of the HD bretheren claim the FXR is a girly bike.
He claims that it was brought out because HD was feeling the pinch from the good handling, powerful Japanese cruisers and needed something to compete with them.
Apparently it did that very well but sales were low because Harley owners.
If I were shopping a Harley, I'd be looking at an FXR because I can't afford an XLCR.

You need to get the wide triples, axle etc. and swap it all over--not hard, per se--but not inexpensive. FYI 2011+ XL1200C has the same 'wide' front end as '48(XL1200X)...
Here is a '48 that we did as a show bike...has 19" dirt track tires and wide wheels f/r. Its as wide as you can go w/o mods...and compares to the stock 16" wheels. Uses 13" shocks in back.
RMD is correct as for 2004/2007. The solid mount bikes are about 50# lighter. EFI needs a tune when you do mods...carb is a simple rejet.
1986 is the first year Evo Sportster. Dr.Linda's is an '87 883 Hugger. You don't want anything before 1986. 5 speeds came out around '91. Don't be put off by a 4 speed, though. It is plenty. Dr.Linda has no trouble keeping up. In fact, out on the interstate, most Twinkies can't keep up with her. I would avoid the EFI for the PITA factor, unless you find something with the tuner and software. Very reliable bike.
Coker makes reproduction vintage tires, including balloon tires like those. That bike looks to be based on an 883N Iron, stock that would have a 19" front (in that style wheel) and the regular width triples...guessing that has been changed. The front wheel almost looks like a rear wheel in terms of size. The rear is completely reworked--no rear frame behind the seat...cut off aft of the shock mounts. Is there any more info on that build?
04-06 is the sweet spot for me at least. The bigger front tire looks cool on a sportster but sometimes only with the smaller peanut tank. I could live with a sportster, but I could not live with a 2.1 gallon tank on anything that is not a bar-hopper.
