One for sale locally. 140,00 miles $3500. Where would the problems be?
Which engine and trans?
If from the northesat, check for rust.
Fuel pump and o2 sensors do weird E36 M3. Otherwise, awesome....
I think they only have the 3.0 duratec v6. PCV can fail and cause oil consumption but it's a cheap and easy fix. They are fun to drive. we have one with the manual trans and it's a great car. Gas mileage isn't as good as I would expect. 20/25 mpg something like that.
Any specific questions?
Just flew up to Vermont and brought back an 05 5 speed. Yes it's rusty but the price was right. It is the 3.0 ford duratec motor so that will lead you in the right direction for common issues with that motor. Valve cover gaskets really.
The blower motor may not feel very strong, drop the glove box and check the in cabin filter. Mine had a nest but it's also common for it to have never been changed.
If it needs a radiator the ENTIRE front end has to come off. Like rad suppt and all so check to make sure no leaks when you inspect.
It's over all awesome with my short time owning it but my shop has had one for quite some time and it has been great. It has a racing beat exhaust on it and it actually sounds pretty good. Handles great for what it is. Both of these cars are manual so no experience with the auto in these though.
I own an '04 Mazda 6 wagon and love it. Bought mine with 90k miles and I turned 190k yesterday. It has been a great car. Like someone said, good handling considering the utility of it.
One thing I will say is it is important to maintain plugs/coils. Any misfires dumps raw fuel into the pre-cats that are part of the exhaust manifold. This may cause the pre-cat to break down and due to its proximity to the exhaust ports, it can suck cat material back into the cylinder on deceleration causing engine damage. (mazda6club forums has some threads on this known issue.)
Shortly after I bought mine, I got a CEL for cat efficiency and found out that the pre-cat was damaged. Sure enough, the plugs and one of the coils were brand new. I likely bought the car immediately after the prior owner had a misfire and traded it before anything bad happened.
I held my breath and replaced the pre-cat and have never had any issues.
They are good looking cars and can hold a ton of cargo with the rear seats folded down. Mine is an auto and I get about 27-28 MPG with about 70% highway miles.
I have had no issues with mine. Original water pump/alternator, etc. Only thing I have done other than normal wear items is I replaced a right front wheel bearing at 180k. The right rear wheel bearing is making a little noise now.
Plugs on the firewall side are not bad to replace. The intake manifold needs to come off, but you can probably do a plug replacement in an hour start to finish.
I change the oil every 7500 miles with synthetic and use a motorcraft filter. The oil analysis reports have all been excellent.
Hope this helps
