National Rental Car did not have the crappy little Corolla or Aveo that I reserved, and had to put me into a Jeep Grand Cherokee with like 4 miles on it instead. (Did I mention that I love National? Emerald Aisle rocks!) But the thing was 2WD! Is that even legal? A 2WD Jeep? When did Al Queda take over at Jeep? Why not just cut the wings off a Bald Eagle while you're at it? What am I, delivering the mail?
Jeep has sold two wheel drive variants of their vehicles since the early 1950s.

I wonder how many people buy the 2wd thinking it's a 4wd and wonder why it sucks so bad in the snow

Really? A 2WD CJ was available? My whole world is spinning. I have to sit down.
Since most Jeeps / SUV's never see anything worse than a dirt parking lot, I'm suprised 2wd isn't more common.
A 2WD CJ is actually called a DJ. (mail jeep to you and me) I feel a little better now, I knew about those.
I own a 2wd Jeep. It was inexpensive, has a 5000 lb towing capacity and I live in the Piedmont region of NC.
If I really have to get somewhere in bad weather, I have a Forester.

And they DO suck. BAD.
My XJ is downright terrifying in bad conditions in 2wd mode.
I don't get it. If you're not driving some heavy offroad, buy something else. If you take away the superior off road ability, they are pretty E36 M3ty vehicles.

Your outrage over 2wd surprises me. If you want real outrage, how about 2wd fwd with a cvt trans?

I have been thinking of buying a 2WD 5.2L Grand Cherokee and doing dirty, dirty things to it. I know the engine is a lump but it has potential. Gas mileage would make a sheik smile, but it would be a hoot to drive.
When I was a little kid in the early 1960s, our next door neighbor had a mid-1950s two wheel drive Jeep station wagon. As mentioned above there were also two wheel drive CJs. I believe the 1950s era Jeepster was available in two or four wheel drive versions as well.

What really puzzles me is that the Compass was supposed to be "rally car inspired", has an AWD option, and shares platforms and engine blocks with the Caliber and Lancer EVO - but there's no turbo WRC version.

I had never heard that the Compass/Caliber shared anything with the Evo, interesting, if true.
This off-road variety is typically always 2wd.
My next vehicle will most likely be a 2wd XJ with a "radical" engine swap.
My sister had a 2wd wrangler. I was surprise too. Its the one that came after the tj (?)

They called that the SRT8 package.

My did fine enough in 2wd, but I did have BFG All-terrains on it. 4wd works much better, though.

I've got BFGs as well... it's just... bad. No weight in the back lol.
i used to work with a guy that had a 2wd jeep pickup from the mid 80's. he put some really knobby old school snow tires on the back in the winter and never had any problems getting around..
but it still seemed wrong to me.

I have a 2WD Comanche sitting here waiting to be rebuilt into a shop truck. It's a 2.5L with a dead #3. I have some sick ideas for it as well.
