Gen3s seem like nicer cars and they get better mpg, but they cost more. The Gen3, especially for '10 & '11 have a reputation of burning oil as well as HG issues nearing 200k and beyond. As mentioned above, a Gen2 engine cost $300 because there is no demand since they don't have issues. A Gen3 engine is more like $1,200 because the demand is much higher.
Gen2 = 1.5L
Gen3 = 1.8L
I've been kinda wondering how hard it would be to swap the 'drivetrain' out of a Lexus HS250H into a Gen3 Prius?
HS250h: 2.5L

This would be perfect for my dream of building a coal fired Prius.
Around here, most electricity comes from coal burning. Therefore, around here, a Nissan Leaf is "coal fired."
In reply to sleepyhead the buffalo :
I think the HS250h is attractive even f it is a bit rare due to its small sales numbers. Only about 20,000 in the US over 3 model years.
However, the 2.5L is the same a the Camry Hybrid which there are many of.
Lexus ES330 (Camry twin) came with a Hybrid too which I think is the 2.5L also. More plentiful than the HS

The main difference is, (iirc) I think the HS250h shares a platform withe Prius... so they have the same wheelbase/track... and it might be easier to swap subframes/computers?
isnt there a highlander hybrid thats faster than the regular highlander? I mean if you're going bananas, might as well go full bananas.
In reply to Robbie (Forum Supporter) :
there a few places where you can attack time, on a track... and they have a class for forced induction 1.6L and lower, and NA 2.5L and lower. If you engine swap, you have to be above 2550#s 'minimum competition weight'. What with all the talk of late of tunes, and EO's, and etc.... getting more performance out of a hybrid's assist motor seems like an interesting approach to take; imho
edit: I'll stop hijacking this thread, and will wait to see what develops.
In reply to John Welsh :
Hey you have any Prius you want to let go? I'm looking for something under $5k to get me around the capital area. My Expedition will not be suitable for that lol. It'll be after New Years.
Huh. $500 Prius thread goes two pages, and my $500 Civic Hybrid thread is crickets. What am I to infer from this?
In reply to 1988RedT2 :
Because we all secretly want a dead engine Prius to rwd convert with a 454. Although I hear I can make more power with a 750 lb V12.
In reply to Stampie :
Gotta admit, the V12 would be sexier, if there is such a thing as a sexy Prius.
Is this guy still like $2500?
(The infamous coolant thermos)

Can't be. Reach out to Randy Dean in Ravenna

I wrote of his operation on this page
In reply to John Welsh :
I was idly curious for partout reasons, if one ever came to that.
This one is a little rusty, but trusty. And now with working A/C and headlights.
John!
sorry to reach out here but the contact form got kicked back.... I'm looking for some info and parts on getting a mfd/screen, camera and maybe some plugs and wire harness to make it work.
can you email me at my username at yarhoo??
... Jwelsh02....yahoo.....
For future reference, look deep into that kickback notice and it will probably tell you what email address it could not send to. Once you have that just email directly.

This is a a Prius Dismantler I have used. A good, normal guy in his 30s who would fit in around here.

In reply to Pete. (l33t FS) :
Looks like the coolant thermos is on eBay for $75 with free shipping.
In reply to dculberson :
Neat. Wonder if I can control it manually to do the opposite, keeping two quarts of cold coolant in storage that I could transfer to a hot engine.
Or use it for its intended purpose for a faster warmup.
Who bumped this thread up again? Darn it. Now I'm looking for a Prius again as daily driver.....
Anybody have any thoughts on this one with a buy it now price of $1,025 ? Should be a low risk buy if it has a $500 catalytic converter right?
What's up with the display?
I don't have much to add, but do remember reading something about Priuses hitting their mileage limit. I think maybe they can only go to 299,999?
2004 & 2005 have a quirk where the odo only goes to 299,999. The 2006+ go to the expected 999,999
You have to replace the whole digital dash screen, called the combination meter with a used less miles unit. They are often sold online for $75
I'd want to know for sure if the factory cat converter has already been harvested off this car. The factory cat alone is worth more that $1k with a $1k asking price, I'm sure it's gone. Expect $400 to replace with aftermarket and then hope you're in an area w/o emissions testing.
In reply to Tom Suddard :
Wow! I guess it's actually a thing.
linky to story about the phenomenon.
So this one has rolled over 300k miles. Impressive.
Would you take a chance on it?
I watched the start up video. Loud af. The cat is gone. Too expensive.
Contact the Dismantler I listed above. He has high mile cars that he's been known to refresh and sell, cheap.
In reply to Indy "Nub" Guy :
This probably just over 2hrs away from you. Likely under 200 miles if you have the big AAA package to tow it home.
'05 w/ 240k asking $1,500
It has been on CL for 25 days. That should make the price come down. Key to the whole thing is does it still wear the real factory cat? Ad says it does. My initial gut feeling is that "does not start" is a 12v battery problem...maybe.
Being a '05 and having 240k, this car then has 60k miles to go before the odo needs to be replaced.
