Hey guys,
Couple of questions. First is, can one possibly add factory remote start to a modern car like our new 2017 Toyota 4Runner? I'm sure the dealership could do it, but judging by the price for running boards ($750 installed was their quote) it might be pricey. I bought Toyota brand running boards for $300 and installed them in 30 minutes. If it's some sort of module, do you think it would be wise to do it myself? Also, can we, and or should we add something like remote start when we leased this car?
System of tubes says its a plug n play but you still need to visit the dealer to have the keys reprogrammed and the immobilizer updated. Module cost is under $300 from online but its buried in the dash.
I just googled "2017 4runner factory remote start" and there is a ton of reading on the subject.
Oooh, this is very relavent to my interests. But in the Subaru context. Staying tuned...

Have you ever had a remote starter before? We added one to one of SWMBO'd cars and I'm guessing it was used 20 times over the 4-5 years we had the car. I have it in my truck but it doesn't seem to heat up a whole lot quicker than if you just get in and drive. I've used it maybe 4-6 times in three years. If I was going to add an option I'd go for the heated seats, much more effective but alot of money to add after. No help on how difficult it might be to DIY.

Ebay it. They offer direct swap in kits that work with modern can-bus cars. They aren't that cheap, but it'll be way cheaper than the dealer. Another option is finding a place that does remote starts/alarm/car stereos to do it for you. If I had the money I'd go that route rather than spend the hours it used to take me to do them (I double check it, and go over the wiring diagrams multiple time)
