Thank you for that link. What a great article. Really hits home for most of us here.

That was an excellent read.

Been there, done that during a cross-country trip when I bought my 96. This was one of the replacement fuel filters that I installed during the trip.

I can't point fingers. I took a barely-rebuilt '88 Mazda 323 GTX on a three thousand mile test drive...

Loved this story, though!

That story is oddly familiar...

I feel so fortunate having bought my Spitfire sight unseen, low bucks, excellent condition, and not encountering THAT story. Very good author, BTW.

Yes, very well written, probably very true. We can all understand.

2007:

1800 miles. The normally reliable tow vehicle turned its fan clutch to glass. A replacement was procured in Dove Creek, Colorado, pop. 176 (and a head of cattle), but our jury-rig was working well so it wasn't installed immediately. Said jury rig later unwravelled and snipped a transmission cooler line, causing a nontrivial engine fire. The only system that proved irreparably damaged from the fire? The air conditioning. In a black truck. In New Mexico. In July. Meh.

2008:

920 miles. No tow vehicle. Actually, this one wasn't nearly as disastrous as it could have been. Aside from a brief panic that turned out to be a loose battery terminal (d'oh!), the car ran perfectly well the whole way. On two cylinders. After I disconnected two injectors and a faulty coil pack.

Oh yeah, and I found out later that the insurance I thought I had on the trip wasn't actually valid.

Holy crap! I think I'm overdue for another one.

At an Antique Truch show a few weeks ago I was half tempted to look at a guy's 1976 International Crew Cab long box. I could have been someone's amusing anecdote.....

Good story.

Guide to Owning a Vehicle with a Mechanical Radiator Fan:

  1. Remove fan and fan clutch
  2. Attach fan directly to driving pulley, or install electric fan

I was having some serious thoughts about a 1980 Scout Turbo Diesel a few weeks back and now I'm kind of glad that those thoughts, and the truck, have gone away.
