Yeah, the metro area is getting pretty sprawling like Phoenix is but not as bad. Local towns abutting Tucson on the NW side are Marana and Oro Valley. Oro Valley is one of the larger retired winter resident areas here. That's another thing, snowbirds make traffic a fair bit busier from mid November through late April or so.

My grandparents lived in Tucson for years. It gets hot there but it is so dry that it feels COMPLETELY different than here (mid MO). like I would rather be there than here in july/August. I liked it. Crime isn't great but it is a huge city. There is a lot if pretty country and roads out there.
I sent a resume to a major aerospace company in St. Charles, Mo as well. :)
Cool, the more MO GRMers the better. I liked Tucson, for the most part, though. Went there must years as a kid.

Weak sauce, Melbourne is hotter than that, Melbourne is considered cold in Australia
I got Valley Fever there as a kid. One of the few places in the world you can get it. Lucky me. My father was in the Air Force stationed at Davis Monthan. Don't remember much else, except we would go up Mt Lemmon in the summer to get out of the heat.
If it's anything like El Paso, TX then I'd rather stay in the eternal cold/gray/salty Northeast or Midwest.
It's better than Phoenix but it's still in AZ. I've seen the interior SW of the US referred to as "The Appalachia Of the 21st Century" and after 8yrs here I'd have to agree.
but it is heaven for off-roading, miles of trails everywhere. and you can carry your assault rifle around and play militia man if you're into that sort of thing.

Ugh. Doesn't sound like a good spot for a young family.
Yeah, not into toting guns around and playing militia.
Has anyone mentioned the heat? I mean, really, really hot.
I did once see a F1 car practicing on a track on the side of the freeway there. Except for the tremendous heat, it was good.
Then there's the heat. I lived in Texas and drove a non-AC equipped Europa as a DD (when it was running.) I know heat. But Tuscon is really hot. Just my opinion. The mountains north of Pheonix are great, though.
