Anyone fluent in Android ROMS? I've got a rooted HTC EVO 4g that hasn't been updated in over a year. I did a little digging on the developer forums and got overwhelmed quickly - I just need something simple that has a working wifi & 4g (well full functionality would be nice). Most ROMS seem to be slick looking but have a bunch on stuff that doesn't work (like wifi, 4g, camera, etc)

thanks Kendall

Did you check CyanogenMod? That seems to be the go-to place for decent ROMs.

This would be my vote if you want something tested well.

Did you try HTC?

Also, I'll second CyanogenMod:

Thanks - I didnt realize that Cyanongen was still updating ROMS for this one. I was sorting by latest releases and only went back to July (last Cyan update in June).

I cant do OTA updates (HTC / Sprint) due to it being rooted.

Put it back to factory, and perform the OTA update and then re-root it.

Either way, back up your data before doing either of these as you may lose it all.

I had OK luck with Cyanogenmod and really good luck with Fresh EVO.

Fresh would be my suggestion, its a stock ROM thats been deodexed and bloatware free.

Any other ROMS I tried just turned my phone into a really high benchmarking brick.

It took me days to master how to do it with my Optimus V, but I finally got it.

And honestly, every rom I tried was worse than the oem one. Oh sure, claims about "clean" and "fast" and such were all over the threads about each one. But all I found was variations of a blank screen and lots of problems with various programs.

Gingerbreaking alone let me use things like Links2SD, which let me shove almost everything onto the SD card, and gave me a phone that flew with speed and stability.

YMMV

I was trying out this rom on my Evo 4G earlier this year. The lighter versions of it did seem to speed up the phone and removed a ton of the sprint software come bundled with the stock rom. I never ran a benchmarking program and can't comment on the 4G as there's no WiMax in Detroit, but was happy overall with it.

Anyone have an idiots guide to whatever the hell youre talking about lol?!?

I got my first android a month or 3 ago as a gift from a buddy - his old phone that was wiped clean by his phone company. Its not a bad device, but its not great either. It has some glitchy stuff going on, and sometimes it just decides it wont make or accept calls. It also takes a super long time to return to the home screen from certain applications. I cant remove some of the apps (Im looking at you facecrook). and I cant move anything to the SD card that isnt media.

Im fairly tech savy, and am pretty sure I could get elbow deep into some of this stuff if I had a good learning resource. I have joined an android forum, but they dont really have patience for noobs, or a good section for those just getting started. Can anyone point me in the right direction of a warm sandy beach for getting my feet wet? All I can find are rocky cliffs.

  1. Go here: http://androidforums.com/

  2. Find the forum dedicated to your specific phone

  3. Look for a "How to root" type sticky at the top of that forum

unfortunately, my phone has no section - Motorola XT720 - supposedly its the GSM version of the original Verison Droid. BUt it has plenty that separates it, so many of the tips/tricks/android black magic wizardry doesnt apply. Ive spent a good deal of time on android forums, but havent had a lot of success.

Well, you may be SOL, then. That phone seems like kind of an orphan. I've only ever owned popular, mainstream Android phones, so there's plenty of support.

If you aren't in an existing contract, you could probably get a new last-gen device from one of the major carriers for free or close to it. Something like a Galaxy S2, Droid Charge, Moto Atrix, etc. Those would have plenty of support and be newer, nicer, and faster than what you have.

I have recently been considering switching to T-mobile. $60 / month, no contract, unlimited everything (but 2gig limit on 4g data, after 2 gigs, you slow down...which is ok, I have wifi at home). They also have an unlimited data and text plan w/100 minutes of airtime for $30, which is also no contract.

They have waaay better phones than the regional carrier Im currently with.
