What they said. LOTS of different stuff out there, 90% is dumb and over-pervy.

Try to find a copy of Akira. Watch it subtitled. The English dub is DUUUUUUMB.

Akira is a genre setter. Initial D given the board you posted in. Wangan Midnight for the same reason.

I was going to suggest sites like MyAnimeList for recommendations, but then I actually bothered to check out the recommendations on that site, and... damn. Some of those are way off base.

In the user recommendeds, for example, there was one guy who suggested that if you liked Arpeggio of Blue Steel then you'd like Wizard Barristers, because they are both CGI and some other stuff. One is a moe-based After The End story where a bunch of anthopomorphized ships have taken control over all intercontinental shipping and communications, and the other is a police/criminal procedural about criminal trials in a world where magic exists, but other than that they are totally similar. rolls eyes

I'm kind of a dumpster when it comes to anime. I watch a little bit of everything. Like anything else, 90% of it is crap. Also like anything else, there are people who will claim that a lot of said crap is good. Check out the things people recommend here for cars, for example

You wanna take this over to the argument thread?

Of the four cars I own, three are Volkswagens. I am fairly sure that I'm just as guilty of liking crap as the next guy. I'm at least intellectually honest enough to admit to it

Get Netflix. They a decend selection.

Some anime is free on the web as well. I'll post the links when I get home.

Most is indeed crap. I like any Miyazaki stuff, but it's almost not anime - but Nausicaa and Grave of the Fireflies are especially good films. Death Note was a great series. Nana was also very well written. Battle Athletes Victory is about the weirdest silliest thing in the world, but it's good somehow. I've heard FLCL is worth watching. Akira is better in printed form.

Anime is very genre dependent. There's is some strange E36 M3 out there. I tend to hang on side of action type genre. Attack on Titan is AWESOME! Kill la kill is pretty good in a strange way. Anything Ghost in The Shell Then have the goofy one hitters like Mazinger SKL were it WAY over the top.

I could never get into Death Note. Same for Mirai Nikki. There was just something about the style where it refused to hold my interest.

Hmm, maybe the "90% of everything is crap" has a corollary that everyone thinks a different 10% is not crap. NAAAHHHHH

FLCL, though. That one hooks you. At first you think it's just being ridiculous to be ridiculous. Then something about it makes you think about something else, and you pay closer attention. Then you think back on it and watch it again. It's only six episodes so it's not difficult. Then you see something else. Then you go online and read six different ways of interpreting it (analogy of male coming-of-age, analogy of Japan dealing with the aftermath of WWII, analogy of... "If you wish to understand FLCL, watch the series from beginning to end, and the desire will pass.")

At one point, I was trolling this page for different series to try out. Then you read treatises like this one and wonder if you probably shouldn't have stayed in college for six or seven more years so you could better understand "a cartoon"...

Everything by miyazaki is amazing.
I really liked full metal alchemist, have heard brotherhood is a better, "truer" version.
When I was really big into it I loves inuyasha, tenchi muyo/in tokyo/etc, and cowboy bebop.
Dragon ball/z/gt will always be at the top.
And I liked the one piece manga. Havent seen the show. Same with shaman king.

Rurouni Kenshin. When he was young, he was an assassin during the last Japanese civil war (the Bakamatsu). During the early Meiji period, he just wonders off and tries to help people in atonement for his murderous past. And one day, he meets a girl..

Holy cow, just realized no one's mentioned Ghost In The Shell yet..started as another manga translated into a movie, and people loved it so much they made a couple of TV series out of it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQIqgxeNtl0

I'll say +1 for GiTS, Cowboy Bebop, Attack on Titan...I thought Death Note was good.

Another one that is relevant to anyone on this board, along with Initial D and Wangan Midnight, is Future GPX Cyber Formula. First season could be a good watch with your kids. It gets more grown up after that.

PM me if you have trouble getting any of these...

Initial D is on Netflix (along with quite a bit of other Anime).

Battle Angel is a personal favorite, although I'm more familiar with the print manga.

Area 88 is fun to watch/read if you can find it.

oh yeah - in general, avoid anything that's been dubbed in English. Subtitles only.

Get a Crunchyroll subscription- or just watch stuff for free on it. They get like half of all the new shows that come out so there's a lot of selection. For things that have been out for a little while, Netflix at least used to be good- haven't had a subscription for a while. I'm WAY off my game over the last year in terms of anime-watching... only shows I'm halfway watching now are Kill La Kill (like a season behind) and Saki (love over-the-top-super-powered Mahjong for some reason...).

Pick a genre of any stripe and I bet we can come up with good suggestions.

Not always...but mostly. Good quality stuff tends to get good quality dubs (well, like half the time). GiTS:SAC has good dubs.

In reply to GameboyRMH:

If they have access to the original sound track and can just replace the spoken parts, yes. But I've watched a number that essentially removed the original sound track, which really detracts from the film. Difficult to know this before buying, although in interest of preserving my bank account, I don't follow anime forums or review sites.
