we've got a purple ball Animal one.
My wife wanted it, and I caved, but I have to say I've been impressed.
She loves it. The animal attachment thing works pretty darn amazing too.

We had a shark given to us. Both the wife and I couldn't use it for more than a few minutes without getting tennis elbow and it didn't pull the dog hair as well as all our dysons. We're on our 4th Dyson in 10 years and it's become only one we even think about now.
We live in the middle of cornfields, on a gravel road with 3 inside dogs. I don't know how it could get much worse!

Granted, I don't have dogs so I don't have to deal with their shedded hair, but if a vacuum only lasts 2 1/2 years before needing to be replaced that doesn't sound too good.
4 Long hair ex show cats here.
There is nothing that works like a Dyson, period for cats.
I like the older purple ones with wheels more then the ball ones. The ball ones can scratch wood floors a little bit and I don't like that.
I haven't tried a Dyson, but have been really happy with the Miele I bought a couple years back for my small place with a mix of hardwood, carpet, and upholstery. I shopped around a bit and liked how compact and quiet it is, with good filtration and easy service.
Not sure if that helps you or not.
My Dyson is 8 years old. We own a Husky...he is a hair factory that never stops shedsing. Ever. We have the yellow Dyson, and couldn't have asked for a better unit. So far, the worst that's happened is in the past year I've noticed the hose is starting to crack, but packing tape has been an efficient solution this far. We will be replacing it before long, and it will be a newer Dyson that replaces it. Best appliance $ I ever spent, by far.

Regular vacuums last less than a year. We still have the last 2, onein the garage and one in the house and we gave the previous one to a friend who needed a vacuum. It had clogged filter and she wanted the larger canister.
Plus, insted of $600 we have bought them at less than $200 on sale from different retailers with coupons.

That title goes to my Troy-built 2-stage snow blower. But the Dyson is solid at #2.
DC41 Animal and a V6 cordless here.
2 cats own the house and the Animal pulls an astonishing amount of cat-related fallout out of the carpets.
The cordless is fantastic. I use it a ton because it's so convenient.
For all you guys talking about vaccuums needing to be replaced, they might actually be ok--just clogged.
I've taken a couple apart, and it really is a very simple machine. Clean it, unclog it, put a new filter in, and it should be good to go. I also cut hair out of the spinning brush about every other time I use it. Oh, and belts are another "its broken" item that are really easy to repair.

It will flat suck the carpet out of the carpet! 16 years of use and it's as beastly as it was the first day. Heavy and slightly unwieldy, but it's made of real metal and feels solid.
I HATE bagless vacuums! and yes the Dyson is bagless too.
Every thing about emptying the bagless is nasty. All the carpet dust right near your face, and always swirls up.
The BEST vacuum value of all time is a USED Kirby. Yes, they are HEAVY, but a giant electric motor that REALLY Sucks is heavy. The self propelled featured is great too. Get a refurbished one of of e-bay or a local shop, or Clist ($200-300).
Will last for decades.

Yeah, before we got our Miele we had a Hoover and a Eureka. They weren't great, but they still lasted for years. Of course, we went through a few belts and a power cord and a few other things, but the idea that they should last less than a year is... far from my experience.
I don't think they are worth it for how expensive they are. I've always had good luck with Hoover and Oreck.

Broken belts that I have to order and wait a week or two are not something I want to deal with. MAny of our friends are mildly allergic to dogs and we try to keep things good for them when they comne over.
