It's currently sitting while I search for some KLDE or K8 heads to extract the valve springs from. The KLZE springs are notoriously wimpy and can cause valve float. Haaaate dealing with people on the internet... after assuring me that I could come pick up the set, I show up at one seller's place only to find engine (and heads) still in the car. Another guy wanted $250... the entire engine could be had for that much. If we have to, the heads in the car's K8 could be used, but if I can get a set for $50 or so, it will save time... and money.
I ended up finding a brand new Fidanza flywheel for $200 :-)
The Interprep springs didn't happen? That's what i would suggest over 15-20 year old used springs that aren't as strong in the first place.

Ooops... sorry, yes got the Interprep springs. Need retainers since Interprep doesn't sell those (brain fart, multi-tasking here). Heads sell for around $50... buying retainers from Mazda... $6 ea. for 48!!!

I'd head to the nearest self-service junkyard if i were you.
What about the retainers out of your old K8? I'd sell you mine, but i'm trying to keep that motor in one piece for future shenanigans.

I may have to go that route (old engine)... just trying to make it as easy as possible (cheap) for my mechanic (I'm not doing the work). I thought about the u-pull-it junkyard, but it is an absolute bitch to get at anything in those engine bays, hence trying to find a cheap set of already removed heads.
Take the retainers from two cars. Only mess with the front head.

Hmmm.... I like the way you think!

yep, that's the beauty of the self-serve JY.
If you just need the retainers its easy, just pull the valve cover, grab a hammer and a socket and hammer till the keepers fall out. Snapon/Mac make tools with magnets in to remove and install keepers if your interested.
I think that tool and the coolant container that attaches to the radiator cap and bleeds the cooling system are the best tools ive ever bought.
