That is apparently a simplistic definition.

HiTempguy wrote: It just so happens, that society in general (not a whole bunch of pedantic hate mongerers like yourselves :p ) thinks civic hatchback when someone says hatchback.

No. "society in general" doesn't give a flying berk about the definition of a "hatchback". Only car nerds.

I completely agree. The hatchbacks hatch is on the back of the car while the coupes hatch is on the top. 100% agree.

Truck

Aw c'mon, you know know I had to do it.

Do I get credit for letting this awesome thread slow down before I set fire to it.

Truck is easier for me. Trucks have full frames, solid axles in the rear, an engine pointed the correct direction, and the primary drive wheels are in the rear. Therefore, a Suburban is a truck. What you have posted there is either a minivan with a long nose, or a wagon.

I refuse to use the term SUV, because the only Sport involved is driving your kids to soccer practice.

Off the top of my head, I can only think of one thing I consider a truck that doesn't meet all my criteria.

This is a proper truck:

This is a fragile unibody truck, but I still think its a truck, mostly due to the solid front axle.

Ok, here is one for this thread. Everyone always seems to credit the A1 GTI with inventing (or at least popularizing) the term hot hatch. I think the original Mini Cooper S was a hot hatch decades before. Of course, the problem is that the original Mini was not a hatchback at all. It has a boot, err should I say trunk, and a fixed rear window. So, it is no way a hatchback, but what exactly is it?

Two doors and a trunk? It's a coupe.

There really should be a term to describe that shape.

I still consider an original mini a hatchback even though it doesn't have a hatch.

I know it's not technically but how much sense have I made so far in this thread?

Hey, let's try "van"! People tell me that the Mazda5 is a van, because it has sliding side doors.

Let's see... lots of things we have called "van" have had swing-out side doors - Corvan, Dodge A100... why even today you can get a Chevy van with swing-out side doors and not sliders.

The first Honda Odyssey had rear doors just like a station wagon. Was it a van?

I'll contend that the Mazda5 is not a van at all, but a station wagon with sliding rear doors.

I agree it's not a van.

Now this I will debate. 2 doors+trunk does not always denote coupe.

Take the Fiat 128 range

4 door Sedan

2 door sedan

Coupe

Or the Ford Falcon range

Wagon

4 door sedan

2 door sedan

And the sexy 2 door coupe

In the Ferrari 250 range the GTE was a berlina aka sedan

Whereas the coupe was this

So yeah. Every manufacturer has their own idea of what the difference is. To some it is a fastback, to others more upright, but there is a difference and there are more 2 door sedans than there are coupes.

I agree that two doors does not always denote a coupe. If anyone read this entire thread, I think we would agree that these designations are not standardized. The terms the car companies use are more marketing driven than accurate or standardized. On the other hand I find this thread kind of entertaining, so carry on...

Around my part of the world, that would be a two door hardtop.

A hardtop would have a b pillar between the front and rear side windows. That is a coupe.

No sir. You are dead wrong. A sedan has a pillar, a hardtop makes it easier to hit a road sign with a beer bottle.

I believe Streetwiseguy is correct. Although I've heard the term "post coupe" but a hardtop does not have a B pillar.

Yes, I got my terms mixed up and didn't take the time to look them up. My mistake.
