I have an iphone 3gs and a new galaxy tab 10.1. I'm looking for a way to collect data to compare my codriver and my runs. I wouldnt mind something that could overlay the data on video. Any one have any experience?

There's a blip on that in the latest issue. Sounds like the GPS aspect was severely lacking, but the accelerometer data was useful.

Look at Logworks by Dynolicious, simple logging app for gathering accelerometer data and speed (via GPS, but it is too slow to be of much use) Creates the data in various standard formats available online to download and manipulate.

Only problem I've found (aside from the GPS) was that the flat file format had a size limit that it couldn't deal with if you reached the end of the file. Not an issue for autocross runs, but wasted a lot of data when we tried to use it for a ChumpCar race.

Then use RaceRender to add the data to your video (add extra camera views, etc)

I have an iPhone 3GS with Harry's lap timer (the $8.99 version) and an external 5MHz bluetooth puck for greater accuracy- it's working great.

To get accurate GPS data from an iPhone you need an external bluetooth puck that samples at 5Mhz or better (the internal iPhone GPS samples at 1MHz - too slow for accurate data logging). To use an external GPS puck you need to jail break your iPhone.

Here's my recipe : 1. Use snOwbreeze to jaibreak your iPhone (freeware) 2. Install Cydia (an app store for apps not supported by Apple - free to install) 3. Purchase and install BTstack GPS ( http://www.ringwald.ch/cydia/gps/ ) throught Cydia for ~$5 - it unlocks the iphone GPS and allows it to be used by a more accurate (external) GPS puck 4. Purchase a GPS puck with 5Mhz or greater sampling - here's an example, most are around $40 or so: http://www.ebay.com/ctg/Navilock-BT-359-Automotive-GPS-Receiver-/62986667?_dmpt=GPS_Devices&_pcategid=156955&_pcatid=43&_refkw=bt+gps+receiver&_trkparms=65%253A12%257C66%253A2%257C39%253A1%257C72%253A5841&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14 5. Install Harry's Lap Timer.

That's it! As a bonus, you can record video on the 3GS / 4/ 4S at the same time Harry's Lap Timer collects data. The Harrys datalog can be exported as a video file which you can overlay on the video of your runs to create this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XusamGWezxA&feature=fvst
