Know that whole broke thing well, experiencing it again. It sucks.

That is the gods truth. Fortune 500 companies pay 90 days late. Mom and Pop construction companies want to know where the invoice is so they can write the check. That's one of my pet peeves. Poor old me can pay my bills on time, but not the multimillion dollar companies. I've got to call them ten times first and threaten to repossess the product. Makes me want to break things.
Sorry for the hijack. Back on topic.

But if I had a degree in art history or Russian literature I couldn't have found a decent job when the economy was booming. Lots of folks spend $50k+ on a degree just to wind up at a job paying $1/hr over minimum wage. Just pointing out that one should evaluate the return on investment before they wind up "fresh out of college broke."lizard wrote:Or are lucky enough to graduate into an economy that isn't FUBAR...the only people who can prosper in this economy are governed by the ATF...Platinum90 wrote: We are "fresh out of college broke". You know how to get a History major off you porch...
Pay him for the pizza.
I have a BIL in that predicament at the moment. Of course he is an idiot so he can't even deliver pizza.
The recent motorcycle acquisition means that I will be eating a lot of beans and rice over the next few months, and drinking Busch, if anything at all.
I miss being college broke. I remember getting $2,000 for a paper I wrote, and thinking I was the richest dude in the world. Beers were on me for weeks.
Now I just got paid 6k to move here to Omaha, and I'm all "E36 M3, gotta put some of this in the Roth, some toward a house, and a bunch of other grown-up E36 M3." I have less of that 6k left than I had of the 2k, and a lot less enjoyable instant gratification from it!
When I entered college, advertising was booming...now even stalwarts like GM, and Pepsi are halving budgets...
Also, I will always pick a job I like over one that pays more if I hate it, and I love writing.

I went to midtown a few weeks back on a Saturday, and I was surprised by $1 drinks and no cover. When everyone is college poor, everything is college cheap!
5 beers AND a pizza!!!! Can I come over? Hit up every student org for the free pizza pop welcome week meetings.

I had a roommate tell me the exact same thing. I moved out the next weekend.

Already doing that. Who knew, I'm an Orthodox Jew and a practicing Catholic!!! (hint, only one of those is true, and I like my bacon)
I can make it work. I'm not broke in a serious sense, just broke in a "I have no money for beer and stuff and have to eat crappy dollar store food" sense. Which is probably good. Going golfing (for free) tomorrow at 7, and hitting the library immediately after. Gotta study, before school even starts . Wish me luck!
Put me in the college broke category.
Here I am 34 and the only work I'm doing is delivering pizza. Classes start next Monday. I currently have $21 in my pocket and after I pay my most next bill tomorrow there will be about $10 in the bank. Another fun part is that the only autocross that is actually in town all year is this Saturday and I don't have the $48 dollar entry fee. Donations would be accepted, but registration deadline is tomorrow. I could have paid that if I hadn't given the girlfriend $50 this weekend to help cover bills. Since she knows where I sleep, I thought it would be a good idea to give her the money instead. 'Course I haven't made any other events this year either due to the whole unemployed college student thing. At least now I can pay for a little fun.
Girlfriend isn't in any better shape either. She lost her job in May and isn't getting any unemployment. She is instead going full time to school this year and maybe finishing two degrees next May instead of just the one she was going to get then.
But for those anywhere within driving distance of Lafayette, IN and are Subaru owners this weekend should be fun if you register today. 2010 Subaru Challenge (Central Region), it looks like the Chicago Region SCCA is running the autocross this year. Indy region has ran it in years past. Though if anyone is in town and wants the best pizza in Lafayette, call Marco's we're in the phone book, and ask for Joe.

Dude, join up with ICAXL!!!! Seriously, if the same drivers from Purdue show up again I'm not running. Between the 3 or 4 of them, they had 3 or 4 clean runs that were DFL by a long shot (not including their one top gun).
Its an inter-collegiate autocross league for central Illinois, and Purdue has a team. I think its about 1.5 hours away, and only 30 dollars to run.
Here is the info: http://www.icaxl.com/
PM me for anymore information.
Mtn, deal. Make for a long day since I have to close Saturday night, but it'll be worth it. I'll PM you. Deadline is 9pm EST tonight. I do have crash space at my house, Friday night. Looks like Normal to Fowler is around a two and a half hour drive. My place to SIA is around 40-45 minutes.
ICAXL does look like fun and since I actually live west of Lafayette practically at the state line Rantoul is only about 60 miles from where I live. But, I am not a Purdue student. I go to Ivy Tech. My student ID could be an issue.

Since she is holding a carton of smokes and a 12 pack and cant defend herself, wrap the rent lease and the electric bill around your hand and punch her in the throat. Ask her then if she can pay the bills? No? punch again...repeat until either the smokes and brew drop from her hands into yours or until she bleeds enough nickels to pay up. That kinda bratty-ass-self-entitled-bull-e36m3 pisses me off to no end. Is it that effing hard to be responsible for yourself? Besides the health benefits, I stopped smoking BECAUSE IT WAS TOO HARD TO SUPPORT MY HABIT AND PAY MY BILLS.
Sometimes I miss the days of being broke.
It's not that I'm rich, but generally I make enough for my family of 7 to get by without missing a meal or a mortgage payment.
But along with the ability to earn a bit more comes greater responsibility and stress. Sometimes I just get tired.
It was much simpler in the old days.
Grass is always greener...

I can certainly understand that. At school, I have two past-times: Autocross if I can find someone in need of a co-driver, and golf (its cheap... trust me). I don't party more than 5 times the entire semester--usually thats two the week before school starts, and one at the end, with two in the middle. I don't wonder "should I do this" "that would be so cool, I'm going to try to fit it in", etc. etc. I don't have money, so I don't.
SVreX wrote: I no longer autocross, play golf, or party. Like I said...
The golfing thing is smart. I should really just quit it, but it grows on you. The partying--I don't really do it compared to a normal college kid, like I said.
But why the hell would you give up autocross?
I am college broke myself though in about the next month before school starts I should make a fair bit of coin. This weekend I have a photography job, should clear about $500 or more. Also putting up some of my leather work for sale and should get another $200-300 for that maybe more with orders.
Oh then the beginning of next month I get to go help train some fish and wildlife guys how to track cougars (mountain lions, not middle aged women after young guys).
mtn wrote: But why the hell would you give up autocross?
5 kids, 2 in college.
Simply not enough time or money to spread around.
I'll get back to it!
Turns out mtn can't help me out this weekend, but gladly I found that I could pay through PayPal and therefore use credit I did have about $60 credit left. Now it is $12. I will be so glad once my financial aid gets disbursed next month and I can pay of a couple of the lines of credit and pay down about half of the big credit card. Oh, and pay the girlfriend my half of the mortgage for the semester.
Saturday will be a long day after all, but should be well worth it. Last time I was out for this event I took 2nd in GS, though later I did find out my car is technically ST. But well, there were only two cars running GS, so I don't think that mattered much. Imagine that the 2 month old car on Avon slicks beating the 7 year old car on brick hard 5 year old all seasons. At least now I have better tires. Trophies have changed a bit too. This year they are only handing out for top three overall, ladies, and novice. So, really I'm just competing against the 22 other people that have registered novice. Wish me luck.
