I have liked Maxum boats (a division of Bayliner) so I'm going to push him towards that. This is the actual model I was looking at about a year ago until I remembered I had money. Why Maxum boats? What about them made you choose them?
About a year or so ago I had done research on Bowriders and Maxum had all the options I was looking for. I went to a couple dealers and looked at them. At the time I had found some good sales and rebates as well that brought a couple that were almost 30k down to under 20k. I know sales and rebates can be found for any company at any time, but the Maxums were the most appealing to me.
My wife and I rent a 38 ft. Sabre on Chesapeak Bay once in a while, she's OK with it but gets a little goofy when she can't see land. We toured a Dutch Barge a few years ago:
Hey! Now THIS is a boat!
Keep buying them Lottery tickets honey.
If you're thinking rough waters and Sea Ray or Bayliner I would suggest a little punching time.
As in go up to one on display and punch its hull at the water line. Make sure you're not liable for the damage to the boat first! For you will very likely fracture the glass.
Now go punch something like a Privateer or Grady.

There was a an interesting "knocking" display at the Miami Boat show about just this.
The Bayliner and Sea Ray guys were concerned LOL
How many of the sunk boat do you think are bayliners or Sea Rays?
This is Santa Cruz Harbor being hit with the tsunami from the recent Japanese earthquake.

I have heard the joke that the Bayliner name came from after a hurricane (get it?) Bayliner in customer surveys are the #2 boat behind Sea Ray. in customer loyalty
Not into boats myself but my dad was. He was a big believer in Bertrams.
Around here, Grady-Whites are considered the toughest thing floating.
