Meatloaf should never have been released, period.
Ugh.. Rock Opera..

I was helping my kid move into a dorm in Boston, he had a wooden milk crate full of albums, Allman Bros, King Crimson etc. A girl moving in next door points at the box "Hey, those are vinyls right? Yeah, I've heard about those!"
Dja hear that? A gray hair popping in....

Actually I believe its:
Queen: dun-dun-dun-dadda-dundun
Vanilla DA-dun-dun-dun-dadda-dundun
I saw one of those VH1 shows. And BTW his manager said "ya, we always knew we where going to have to pay"

I've found that a lot of that depends more on the equipment you run them on.... but that's another discussion.
We need a Grassroots home audio thread.

True on both accounts. We have 3 stereo systems; one bought new in 1980ish, and the other two used within the past ten years. Getting high-quality equipment that is dedicated to fidelity, not volume, makes a huge difference. To the point that it is hard to tell the difference in CD's and Vinyl. Of course, if you are recording the CD's, its a totally different story.
Funny, I was just thinking about getting rid of my vinyl today. I bought a ton in the mid-90's when I could buy them at 10 for a dollar. They are just not practical enough for me right now, I don't listen to much music at home. Everything else I listen to has so much audio compression (I wish they would quit that) that its hard to adjust to vinyl for only occasional listening.

Whatcha got? Where ya at? I just sold an amp, so I think I'm rich, and if I can replace one heavy, impractical, hard to move thing for several of the same, I'll be happy.
(Oh, I see you're in Gainesville. I don't even want to know what it would cost to ship a box of records to St. Louis from there. Unless it's old soul, funk, R&B and country. In which case, let's talk.)

I do agree with this. I have a relatively high end Sony (and, I mean high end for Sony, don't get me wrong) component system that I inherited from my girlfriend's great-grandfather, and it does a pretty good job compared to 9/10ths of modern stuff.
Seems the only thing I use CDs for any more are in the car - because I'm too lazy to wire in an iPod interface and we're blessed with great radio here - or for taking work-in-progress mixes around to various stereos to hear different things in different environments. If I'm casually listening to music in the background, I'll run iTunes/iPod, if I'm actively listening, it's vinyl all the way, and usually through my Grado headphones, because I've been getting increasingly fed up with my speakers at home.
Of course, the caveat must be added that listening to CDs on good equipment only makes a noticeable difference when the CD is produced, mixed, and mastered correctly, which they generally were in the early days of the various digital audio media. It's appalling how much stuff is being produced these days that's so loud that it's unpleasant to listen to.
