So the belt transmits all power from the engine to the wheels. The transmissions are cvt's(continuously variable transmission). The belt runs between two pulleys that effectively change diameter on the fly based on load and engine speed. They use weights and springs to change diameter. This is old info but I think Honda was only one of the few people using an automotive style automatic transmission. Most use cvt's due to cost. They are very similar to comet clutches on a go kart.

The clutches were 1st developed for snowmobiles.

Forgive me for being simple but what are the drive shafts forward and after the tranny? Are they driven off the belt pulley?

They come out of the 4wd transfer box/low range box. They are driven by the belt and drive the front and rear differentials.
