They're pretty affordable really. If you want more affordable there's usually a local 4 cylinder series that's about 3/4 scale of these.
Insert turbocharged 4-banger and GO.

Another car to consider that is along the same lines but a little cheaper to buy, consumables are cheap, dead nuts reliable, and still considered closed wheel racing... Thunder Roadster.
