Was that a landspeed machine without the body work? Something that didn't rely on acceleration? Because one thing that always strikes me about race cars of that vintage is how little they seemed to understand about traction. I know tire technology was in its infancy, but anybody with 2 brain cells to rub together can see that pushing the gas pedal down on that engine is going to incinerate the driven tires without appreciably moving the vehicle. The only people who seem to have understood this were Auto Union.
Yeah, that's plenty safe; the gas tank is well away from the driver.
