Laid back headers good for +5mph
Top fuel headers are supposed to be good for several hundred pounds of downforce.
Like 8 tiny jet engines.
Edit: 800# of downforce.
NHRA recently announced that the angle of the headers on Funny Cars would become standardized starting with the Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals, outside of Denver, Colorado. This process of angling the headers on Funny Car engines has done more to advance the performance of the class than any other performance process.
NHRA’s tech department determined the process needed limits.
In a memo issued to teams on July 12, NHRA’s tech department said, "Effective immediately the minimum header angle will be 32 degrees.
i.e.: teams were tuning downforce w/ header outlet angle w/ multiple sets of headers per track conditions.

First - no hotlink foul
Second - "This process of angling the headers on Funny Car engines has done more to advance the performance of the class than any other performance process." I call shenanigans...
And this could be settled with 4 passes.
Old header old tire

The last two would settle it and the first two would be controls. You could do multiple runs with each and run statistical analysis for confirmation and minimize other variables.
It doesn't matter, the rules committee took care of it right quick.
Jimmy Prock was the first to do it and make it work.
It made a significant difference or the (thou shalt not go over 300mph) rules committee would not have gotten involved.
Can you imagine how fast they could go if there were no rules?
In reply to bentwrench:
It was more directed to the hyperbolic statement of it having done more to advance the performance of the class than any other performance process.
Yeah, I wish they would just let them run. Stop setting rules to slow them down.

Everyone would die. They would ditch superchargers and the rev limiter, run turbochargers, and immediately begin going well over 400 mph, and there isn't a track in the world long enough for that to be safe.
Whoa, Curtain Corner had a sale?

It seems they overlooked an easy fix to their problem. Turn the headers around so they are pushing back against the cars.
Yesterday I was checking Google before I posted a comment and the Google did not let me down.

Well then, I guess that problem would sort itself out quickly wouldn't it?

A carb'd 426 will not make enough power to break your bank. And that looks like a 392.
A 392, however, will break the bank. The Fuelie guys chewed up and spit out all the 392s in the quest for more power.
I'm assuming 392, did they put lessor engines in Chryslers?

A carb'd 392 won't make enough power to break parts. Unblown Fuel is one of cheapest classes to run, you have to do something stupid to break one. The trick is getting it to run on all 8.
I watched Pick & Pull scrap truck loads of iron hemi motors in the late 70's! It made me want to cry.
What made the Hemi motor legendary was that you could stuff bigger valves in it than any other chamber design. They were not very efficient motors. They are still used because of the rules.
First: obligatory hotlink

explained here:
http://competitionplus.com/drag-racing/news/funny-car-exhaust-header-tweak-is-a-double-edged-sword
It was noted as a performance gain in launch and E.T. by drivers and crew.
Also noted as a safety issue. If the engine lost a cylinder while on the throttle the now unequal force would push the car that direction.
First heard of this on an ESPN NHRA broadcast where they noted performance and safety aspects. Probably bet your lunch money that the rule change was done in the name of safety as to performance.
Pretty good article there btw.
