Thanks, all. And I do mean ALL.
1987-1994
Lombok Straights Crisis Indonesia, then Southern Philippines (Moro Islamic Liberation front, and the New Peoples Army), Panama (yes that is how I spent Christmas 1990). first Persian Gulf War, Somalia.
Who knew weather would be so exciting? I was a Tactical environment support specialist (MOS 7418), US Navy assigned to the 13th and then 15th Marine Expeditionary units. Then assigned as Mobile Detachment from the Naval Pacific Meteorology and Oceanography center Pearl harbor Hawaii, with a short stint at the Joint typhoon Warning Center.
7 years, lots of moving.
I have no digitized pics of my grandpa, but he served in Korea, and earned a purple heart for catching bullet fragments in his leg after a pile of concrete caught the bullets meant for him. He carried a Thompson. He said because it was a difficult weapon to operate and he had the skill to do it. Grandma says it was because he was blind as a bat and an Auto allowed him to spray and pray. Either way, grandpa was a badass. Wish I coulda gotten to know him.
My Dad was a SeaBee, served right beside the Marines. First action he saw was the invasion of Iwo Jima. Never told a war story, but came home with a belly that looked like a road map and two Purple Hearts. Enlisted at the age of 40, but he was a heavy equipment operator and surveyor for the Corps of Engineers. Navy wanted him.

I've heard that heavy equipment operators got a little extra in their paycheck, since cranes bear a striking resemblance to high priority targets like radar towers.

I think you meant SHELLBACK , but its still a cool designation!
<-- Shell back, and Realm of the golden dragon
The Order of the Golden Dragon for sailors who have crossed the International Date Line.
I should be a shellback, but never got the ceremony.
On second thought, it's ok. I don't really need that award.
I'm neither a Shellback, nor a Plank Owner but I am a BlueNose
(not mine... somehow it's gotten lost over the yrs)
