My father bought one of these in 1981. I'm pretty sure that it wasn't $8500, though.
He hooked it up to a tape recorder and a black and white TV.

More like how many can you buy today. I could buy 20 of the laptops we just got my in-laws. $8500 was pretty steep even back then. But Tandy was expensive (and junk).
Back in the '80's we were selling XT clones for about $1600-2000. With all the good stuff like 360K floppy drive, 20 meg hard drive, 640K RAM. The higher end of the scale got CGA monitor. The lower end green monochrome. For a little more than the green you could get amber. I set my command prompt windows to use green text today.
This is a better example of what we were selling when I started in this field. Planning an exit from it next year.
