I believe they were digging some areas down now that the canal is closed and they didn't have to worry about traffic. According to the lock tender, the last boat had gone through two weeks beforehand, a brand new fire boat that was built in Quebec and was being sailed all the way down to it's new home in Corpus Christi, Texas. They were going east through the Erie to get to Hudson Bay and then were going to sail along the coast all the way to Texas. Helluva voyage.
My great-grandfather actually worked on the canal, and would get aboard the houseboat at Sylvan Beach and then work east over the week to Little Falls. My father talks about how his father, at the age of 10, would have to drive a Model T truck by himself from North Bay, NY to Little Falls to pick up his father on Friday night and bring him back to the farm. That's about a 115 mile round trip. Because my grandfather was so young, he couldn't sit and work the pedals, so when he needed to change gears, he would have to stand up and brace himself in the cab door to get the leverage. The fingers on his left hand were all crooked because the one time the strap holding the door back (they hinged backwards, and would tie them back in the summer) snapped and the door caught his hands in the hinges and broke all his fingers.

Name this (now deceased) Northeast organized crime figure from the 50's, 60's and 70's. BTW, is that a Hillman Minx on the right in the background? That wouldn't have been his. He drove Caddy convertibles.

Ran into this boat on a bike ride a couple months ago. Appears to use cameras (the little white things under the hat) instead of windows:
I figure some of you weirdos would think this is cool.

And there'd be no one there to raise them if you did...
Pics unrelated.
VQ engines can hold a lot of oil in the valley.
Sad to hear Mimi Parker of Low passed from cancer.

Don't forward control vehicles like that usually tilt the cab forward to service the drivetrain? I'm kind of thinking that thing must SUCK to service..
Well I'd never seen an actual fartbox before:

The Toyota Hiace is a van, so engine access cover is in between/under the front seats.
