If you run the detail shop as an outside contractor it can be very rewarding $$$$, local guy started with a lean-to and is now a rather wealthy man, he uses the dealerships building but supplies all the labor and material. Now if you just work in the clean up shop most detailers in this area max out around $10 an hour from what I have heard.

Dr.Boost, how long ago did you write the Chrysler training classes? I was a Chrysler tech for almost 15 years and have taken many classes at the Annapolis junction, Richmond, and Philly training centers (before they were closed)I found almost all of the classes to be very useful with good documentation. Did you know Jeff Stone or Reene (last name is Spanish) they worked out of the A.J site for the most part, good guys and very informed. Paul B

I stopped writing them about a year ago. Now I'm developing for Nissan.

if it's what you love, as in when you're not doing stuff around the house on a weekend, you're either in or under a car, writing about cars or researching them and aspects of them (and not just on forums) then it can eventually pay off in a big way, but expect there to be a solid 5-15 years of doing something within the field before landed a dream gig within it. The sweat experience while maintaining it as a hobby will separate you from other applicants when the time comes.

(from a guy who's worked in the field since 2002, in that time seen the good the bad and the ugly in terms of pay, dealing with clients, boom time, bust time, management and co-workers, and just this past month finally landed said dream job, but that being said it's a DREAM job making everything up to this point worthwhile)

I always wanted to work with cars but aren't the most mechanically talented or didn't want to do sales. I actually work for a dealer group taking care of online listings (photos, descriptions and pricing) and other odds and ends stuff. I work a pretty normal schedule (9-5). Maybe look around at dealers to see if they have a unique or specialty position.
