On my local CL just on the first page there are 3 running and driving SN95 V6 cars for less than $1k. In the last few months I've seen them for half that. Is this a trend everywhere? Are these decent candidates for building something light and sporty? I don't see the value coming up any time soon but one may be worth getting just to have a project over the next few years...
no, the only good v6 is the 4.0 in the 05-10 and the 3.7 in the 11+.
Good swap candidate.
Disk rear end, and I think that the 6 got the same transmission as the V8.
Drop in an exploder pushrod 5.0 or ls swap it.
I know the engines are rather anemic, but is the car itself a decent performance platform?
The rear axle in all v6 cars till like recently are 7.5's which cant hold much power, its a heavy pig of a platform unless you want to go fast in a straight line.
If by an updated 70s chassis with a stick axle, you mean decent performance platform.
It all depends on what you intend to do with it.

These guys will build you a monster, but don't look at the suspension prices.
I don't hate live axles.
My idea of sporty is pretty mellow by most standards. Anything approaching 100hp per 1000lbs is pretty dang good in my book. And I find most things under around 2500lbs to have at least some sporty potential. I don't know if either of those numbers are reasonably feasible with a v6 sn95. Just thought the cheapness might be worth looking into.
It's not a great chassis, but the SN95 is the most fully developed version of it. And there's aftermarket galore for them. If you like the look of them, you can certainly do worse as a basis for a build.

Swap in a V8, upgrade rear end, brakes, suspension, etc.
Then the $1000 car ain't so cheap anymore. I find the looks and interiors horribly dated looking. If you wanted to build a monster track/HPDE car it would be a good starting point.
You are very likely not getting an sn95 down sub 2500 lbs.. that would be taking almost 900 lbs out of the car

So it really is a heavy pig. I didn't think they were more than 3k. Hmmm. Maybe if a manual GT pops up in the price range. It happens.
they are 3200 lbs for the v6 and 3400 lbs for the v8

Ernesto Roco's SN95 is probably the lightest one on the planet.
He put it up for sale on Racing Junk yesterday.
In his ad he list the weight w/o driver at 2,430 w/fluids.

To get that light, the car has had every unnecessary bit of metal cut off.
Also the following:
Dart aluminum block.
Carbon fiber driveshaft
Carbon fiber roof panel
Carbon Fiber doors / removable
Carbon Fiber trunk lid / removable
Carbon Fiber fenders and Hood
Carbon Fiber front bumper cover with splitter
Carbon fiber wing
Lexan front and rear windows
Lexan quarter windows

Wait, is Mudstaing the name of Ford's Crammit competitor?
I loved my 94 V6 more than my 04 GT. The best upgrade is changing the 2.73 rear or a 3.73 and a limited slip.
I went from not being able to spin a single tire, to lighting up 2 Azenis at the start of each autocross run. It didnt really change highway mileage all that much either
I'd love to find another one

If you pretend the GT didn't exist for only a few thousand dollars the 3.8 V6 with a stick in the New Edge SN95 isn't a horrible car. I had one for an overnight loaner once and it actually surprised me that is wasn't awful. Kind of fun, in fact. People race the horrid 2.3 4 cylinder Fox Mustangs; I'd rather have a V6. You have to be careful about SN95 GTs though because some years were real dogs.
None of them are good handling cars compared to a S197 though. You can pick up a V6 one of those for under $5000 now. 210 hp (crank) stock and you don't need $6000 of Maximum Motorsports parts to make it turn without threatening to kill you.
In reply to ddavidv :
yes 94-95 got the 5.0 still, 96-98 got the dog slow non pi 4.6 99-04 got the decent pi 4.6. So avoid 96-98's.
It's an even heavier version of the fox chassis. So all the items people complain about with rear suspension geometry plus a bunch of weight. I'd rather have a 2.3 powered fox then an sn95 v6 car. Atleast the 2.3 has a decent aftermarket.
In reply to MrChaos :
The pi parts are cheap and swap over easily.
I find this relevant too as I see a lot of SN95 and new edge V6 Mustangs for sale near me, and I'm looking for a cheap car to abuse. I think someone else said that the V6 had a 7.5 rear end, which isn't very strong. And from my research they are super heavy. I want to find a GT for cheap and turn it into a rally car like the one posted here a few weeks ago, and someone is doing a build on.
also they have super high gears 94-98 cars have 2.73 gears 99-04 gets 3.27
I have one in my driveway. It was $300. It runs fairly well. The problem I see with these cars is this: at this price point they all need something. Tires. Some fixing. Shocks. Suspension stuff. Brakes. Lots of little bits and pieces to make them work well. Parts are between cheap and free, but putting on the cheapest tires that WalMart would sell me doubled the cost of the car. The car owner and I took it out for a drive and beat on it. We thought a bit and realized that the 40 hours of work and additional $400-600 it parts in needs to be "good" aren't worth it. There are at least a half dozen other better cars that we can get into for $1500 that we both like a LOT more than this car.
They're cheap. Parts are cheap. Still not worth the time and effort. Not for us anyway.

So what you’re saying is someone needs a spec V6 SN95 Mustang class, be it dirt track, rallyx, Challenge, etc.?
