I was there for the Grassroots Rolex Experience. Had a great time. Thanks again. But I have one nagging question. What is the significance of the small blue light that is mounted above some of the stop lights in Daytona Beach?

I'd also like to know. Living in the red light capital of the world, I see them every day. Everyone says they're red light cameras (why blue lights?), but I'm not so certain.

here in houston, they have red lights on top of some of the signals, and i've heard its to signal a cop watching cross traffic when the light has turned red, so they know who made it through and who ran the light. seems like here theyd rather just throw up a red light camera instead though, so i dunno

opticons.. part of a remote light changing system for emergency vehicles, which change the lights by remote controls in vehicles. you can also buy or build a "remote" fairly easily, but its also a federal crime to use one (google "Mirt")

Very different.

Ding ding ding! Strizzo got it. Dunno why they're blue, either, but yeah, if you watch them, you'll see that they light when the traffic signal they're on turns red. Then the real fun begins as you count the cars that continue to enter the intersection from that direction.

The same device is used here in Gainesville. The only difference is the small lights are white, not blue. Same concept though...once the light turns red, the little light turns on. It is so police can issue red light citations viewing the intersection from any direction, not just traveling the same direction as the offender.

We have them in Charlottesville, they tend to be white.

Is the intersection leading into a K Mart?

Ours used to be white. I remember reading an article in the paper stating that the blue LEDs are easier to see and use less electricity. They are hard to miss.
