I can understand this as it is something that is out of the ordinary for your average joe, but statistically speaking, flying is the safest form of transportation out there.
I hate flying because of everything except for the flight. I've only been on an airplane two times, once to DC in the fourth grade, and the trip back.

Statistics or not, there's nothing I like about being crammed sardine style into a giant aluminum can at 30k feet. I'll drive unless I'm being paid to go somewhere far away.

Which airline?
While I don't fly a lot, every single flight I've been on in the last 10 years, they've done that. I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks it's stupid.
On my last flight, upon landing, the girl seated beside me filled 2 vomit bags, right after she finished clapping.
TransAt? I fly their Hamburg->Toronto run a couple times a year. Everyone claps, and I wince.
Nobody does that here in Asia or in Europe from what I can tell. Except dumb Canadians on holiday.
I flew Transat once to Mexico - I would have considered clapping too as I was so flipping happy to get off that plane. Nothing like squeezing 4 seats into an area meant for 3. I had to "pop" into my seat from about 2 feet above the arms.
Over heard on an airliner "Flying is like deadly poison, one drop can kill"
