I work full time and have a family, plus 5 cars. I think, on average I spend maybe an hour a month dealing with veggie oil, from the collection to putting it in my tank. The space, that could be an issue. I have a corner of my garage, maybe 4X8 that houses my filtering setup. I'd be more than happy to help anyone that wants to give it a go.
It is the initial investment--both time and money--that kill the veggie car idea for me, not the actual upkeep.

It's not that bad. You can get the filtering setup done quick and easy if you're willing to spend the money. But you can GRM it and be filtering oil for nearly free if you are willing to spend a little more time up front. Just think about it though, no matter how far you drive, you'll only use a few quarts of diesel a day.

My VW is like that. I think it has valve guides like a wizard's sleeve.

Oops, I mean a few quarts of diesel a day.

No space at school, limited time. The toaster oven and me wrenching on whatever POS I'm driving at the time draws enough attention, let alone me hauling gallons of oil in and out of my room.

Thoughts on this? http://indianapolis.craigslist.org/cto/3341824690.html It's about $600 more than I have/want to spend and a looonnnnnnggg drive. But it is a big ole S class, with "no rust". Not sure what "no rust" means down there. Also told it shifts harshly when cold, not sure what that indicates, I don't pretend to understand automatics beyond taking care of them.

It looks decent from the pics, I'm not sure I'd pay $1800 for one with a smashed door like that, but if that's all that's wrong it's not bad. I think the 84 has a different belt setup on the engine that makes them really hard to change but other than that they are easy to work on. It may need suspension work soon, but other than the lower ball joints which take a $1000 tool to install (so just have a shop do it) all you really need is a special spring compressor and a ball joint separator to rebuild the suspension at home easily.

Depends. Are you an oil-leak enthusiast with a debilitating fear of acceleration?

My buddy just bought an 82SD. More miles than that, no body damage though. Sunroof doesn't work (who cares?) but the front seats are nasty and the wood needs replacing. He paid $750. The wood, drivers carpet and I think an internal door part set him back $25 at a junk yard. It runs and drives VERY well.

No, but I can deal with leaks and don't mind slow(the Yugo makes everything else feel fast). I love the idea of having a stupid swank, stupid durable car for minimal cash outlay. I also love technical stuff, the service manual for the W126 is nuts, EVERYTHING IS SPECIFIED.

I'm also due for a new ride, the POS sunfire is becoming a worse and worse DD, its getting rusty enough jacking it up involves some creativity.

Unless you have to go up steep hills a lot the OM617 has plenty of power for everyday driving. I'm more often concerned about pulling into traffic while I'm riding someones bumper in a wrx or evo though a freeway onramp than anything that is the cars fault.
