Time to finish off the racoon with a shot gun, then send it to Kieth for shaving and tattooing.

Don't feel bad, I once had a fake tree up until June.
We keep Ada on a harness as well as a collar when she's out back. That way when she has the random berzerker episode and hits the end of the tether at full bore it's not just her neck...
Ruffwear harness. Our Whippet was an escape artist until we found this. I show this pic as we have dealt with tripods and the little handle makes moving even a four legged dog easy.
Best wishes for a quick recovery.

Y'know what my nickname was in high school, right?

I'm gonna go with Whip It...

I bet three legged whippets are still faster than normal dogs. Ex-girlfriend's parents had a pair. I remember throwing a Frisbee and having the dogs run up, jump, and pluck them out of the air before the flying disc made it 10 feet from my hand
Hope everything comes out OK. Racoons are horrid vicious things.
Wally wrote: I hope he comes out OK. Have you tried one of those metal choker chains? I also see some of the dog walkers in Manhattan have two collars on a dog so in case one breaks.
I use one of those only when walking mine and a Kong collar the rest of the time when he's in the yard. You have to be really careful leaving it on them because the collar can get hung up on something, especially if the dog jumps, and the collar will hang them.
They work great for obedience work though.
My dog got kicked in the face by a deer once, and she still chases everything. The funny thing is she has zero killer instinct. When she actually catches up to a wild animal she tries to play with it.
Hope your pup has a speedy recovery!
Having uncles who introduced me to the joy of chasing dogs that were chasing raccoons through the South Carolina woods on cold, clear, winter nights, I can only add that they always told me that raccoons can do bad things to dogs. They look cute but they can cut a dog up in a second. Maybe it has more to do with the dog, but they didn't want their plott or redbone hounds to get too close.

Raccoons are in my experience some of the toughest animals in North America, I would recommend no less than #4 buckshot or a .22 Magnum with good ammo. They're too stupid to know when to die, so they'll keep limping along unless you really tear it up or hit it in the brain.

i popped one right between the eyes with my .22 and the bastard still made it 40 feet into the woods before it dropped. the next one got 9mm between the eyes. that was instant. so was the one that got death by malamute. she tore it right up without getting one scratch.
hope the dog heals up. are you in a "no discharge of firearms in city limits" area or rural? i'd set some food outside the woods a few yards at dark and wait it out.
