Leaving behind whether or not an Elio ever becomes reality, they've at least put up a fun toy to play with where you can "build your own" and pretend you have one.

I find it amusing that you get a t-shirt if you put at least $100 down on your reservation.
Beyond it's potential to be vaporware, it just looks like a death trap to me. The Morgan 3-wheeler looks like a great idea (which I totally want, but $$$$$), and I even think the Polaris Slingshot is kind of cool. The Elio though... something about it just looks like a rolling coffin to me. Nope, I'm not interested in being closed up in that.
You can get Elio t-shirts without the deposit. Elio SWAG
I'm not expecting them to make it to market, but I'd very much like to see it.
Put one together, it's not too interesting, but it's under $7.7k which is very interesting. Could make a nice DD.
A fully kitted out Elio is $14k. Considering the base price is $6.8k, being able to double the price of the car with options is usually Porsche's forte'.
I'm soooooo close to dooming Elio by putting $100 down. I've got the Charlie (Cleveland) Brown(s) touch.

I like the retro wheels, but the retro fenders just look wrong on that car. And they'll probably kill your MPG too. I actually fitted mine with retro wheels and standard fenders.
Yes you can hardly see the wheels, but the car should handle better with the lower-profile alloy wheel, and I do prefer the look of the little sliver of wheel that you can see peeking out.
If the Elio becomes popular enough, maybe we'll see stuff like this Polaris Slingshot Quad kit:
My guess is that if a small little shop can do it, there is no reason people who are home building Locosts can do it for cheap. Now, the question is whether the Elio design will allow for such a conversion...

OMG, that is full of awesome!!

Doubt it! The Elio is FRONT wheel drive, not much to gain with conversion.

Is the "retro" wheel actually a different size?
I priced one out and it only came up to about $7200 roughly. Wonder if anyone will come out with a bike rack for one.

Strap one to each side as outriggers.

Me too. Almost none of the options are interesting to me.
The closest to expensive bling I semi considered was the Infinite Skyz. But, unless there's more to it, my cell phone does almost all of it already.
Should the vehicle ever become real, I'm still curious about it and semi-interested. Although Pep-Boys being the dealer service, ick!
It's funny, the lack of bike transport accommodations was one of the first things that turned me off to the Elio as a viable DD choice. that, and the fact that the additional drag of a bike rack would probably kill the fuel economy and spoil one of the major points of this "car".

The Slingshot just got way more cool. Looks like a side-by-side utility crossed with a F1 car. Just needs a screaming 10,000rpm motor.
I priced one out, couldn't find a single option worth adding.
I'm also still curious on the bike racks & other sport-ish accessories. Sad, because if they simply built the car with 4 wheels, and a little more room (i.e. Honda Insight) for a price like this, I'd be all over it. Even with severely reduced economy.
What's attractive about this car is the base price, and pretty much nothing else :(
