I can't be 100% sure who said it at the moment but I think it was AngryCorvair. He said that about 1% of the population are shiny happy people. Clearly that's false... it's waaay more than 1%.
i have two comments to make about this: first, just like the guy in the wife beater who gets grabbed by the boys in blue while scaling a chain link fence after ditching his pickup, it wasn't me; second, i totally agree it's way more than 1%.

On a consistent and irritating basis. It's a major reason I live where I do and keep my family at an arms length. They like to misquote and believe dumb E36 M3 about me. I've gotten tired of defending myself.

Yep.
Including in mainstream newspapers, TV news, and on THIS site.
Ive even had my words edited to say something I did not say.

"I stand by all the misstatements that I've made."
I don't know about you being misquoted but you making misstatements yeah.

I don't need to be misquoted, I say dumb things all on my own that I then regret for a long time afterwards, all by myself.

Ditto. It was an effort to get me fired for being the wrong tone of skin. I didn't deserve a nice job and therefore must be a white supremacist. That one still grates me.

I am AngryCorvair, and I definitely approve of that message!
You weren't only misquoted, you where stereotyped.
"They" just assume all Covair people are the same....
(it was my quote, and I was trying to be conservative, the primary point is that the vast majority of people are not a-holes)
So.... 5%?

Peabody is OK, but that ZW guy was 36 grit. ;-)

10% of people are shiny happy people, 10% are worth knowing, 80% exist to create traffic jams.
not sure this counts, but my sons ratted me out to my wife yesterday. They (8 & 7) told her that I took them around the race track in the RX7 without seatbelts at 90mph.
Truth: they rode on my lap for a lap at around 30mph at a private test at a short track.

Problem I have is that often I don't flesh out my comments enough, so I get misquoted or misunderstood a lot.
Speaking to the owner of a morbidly obese, dog, "stop feeding him Vienna sausages, if you have to give him a treat give him a single dry cheerio."
Two months later, owner informs me he's been giving the dog bowls of Cheerios with milk (and he's gained 3 pounds), because "you told me to."

Yes, on this forum, among other places. It required moderator intervention. The particular person's signature still tangentially refers to the incident.
