I used to know a lot about which mufflers made certain sounds but most of that experience centered around muscle cars.
Now that i'm building a hot LS6, i need to catch up. I like this kinda zttt zttt treble-ey sound
Mine wont be cammed quite like this big but how might one go about getting this sound?

Not the sound I expected to come from a Cadillac...
As crisp and borderline raspy as that sounds I would assume it is sans mufflers.
I always liked this one:

the closest thing i've got to your caddy video is summit chambered race mufflers on my uncammed 5.3
i can't wait to hear what happens when i do the cam/heads this winter. because it sounds glorious on the stock parts.

Do i have to turn in my man card if i think that sounds like doodie?
This will be of no help other than to get this post off topic, but this is my favorite exhaust sound:
E46 M3 CSL with straightpipes
Yeah, I would guess that Caddy was just straight pipes.
The Roadkill Muscle Truck gets my vote
though that Caddy is nasty. (In a good way)
In reply to Swank Force One:
I wouldn't say turn your mancard in but I think that sounds great.

I assure you, they sound a lot better in person. There is a C5 Z with what sounds like the same system and maybe a cam running around Woodward last time I was out there on a Saturday evening. When he got on the throttle it was crazy.

180 headers for the win.

Seriously, if you're putting the monies into a build like you're doing, 180 headers are worth the money. What an amazing sound.

I like the 180 degree headers and the M3 CSL sounds the best out of what has been posted so far. The caddy just sounded like it needed an exhaust system installed, and the C5 Z06 and that truck sounded like nearly every full size truck I hear driving around here.

Could you take an inline 4 cylinder and create an exhaust that mimicked the lengths in a subaru engine and get that distinctive subie sound in some other car?
A friend of mine used to have a base C6 corvette with long tube headers and a Corsa exhaust. This isn't his car but it sounds very similar, it was a very very good sounding car.

Ive been told my Corvette sounds very good, Kooks 1 7/8" longtubes, offroad X pipe (no cats) and SLP Powerflo with all of about 8" of muffler.
Its loud at the top end of the track, thats for darn sure!
chambered exhaust is the way to go with LS1 and LS6. I had 1 7/8 Kooks headers into a 3 inch y-pipe, and magnaflow muffler and it didn't sound bad. Had a big ass LG Motorsports G5x3 cam though.

Yep. Unequal length primaries will do that.
The MSMs are much more "burble-y" than normal Miatas.
Subies sound normal with headers that don't have a design flaw.
If you look on youtube for "mid-engine cavalier" you'll hear an Ecotec that sounds just like an STi.

Probably easier to hit yourself in the head. Why in gods name would you want your car to sound like fatter VW Beetle? Some people....
However, you could easily do it by dividing the exhaust at the collector into to two and extending the pairs further down the car to match the subie's lengths.
I like the way this sounds.
Of course I might be biased cause mine sounds identical.
I'm pretty sure that CTS-V is just running straight pipes. V8s have a naturally awesome sound that doesn't need to be altered.
The 180deg headers will change the lumpy "American" sound to a smooth "Italian" sound, which may not be what you want.

Tractor would be my descriptor for the subie sound.
Wish I could do much with the exhaust on my car, but the R18 has an exhaust manifold built into the head. "Headers" for it are nothing more than a down pipe that replaces the cat.
Andy Nelson's 180 degree headers and 4" exhaust on his $2006 Challenge Datsun was probably the most amazing sounding thing ever. I don't have a link, unfortunately.
Way back when, the story goes, when Triumph was developing the TR6 the brass were saying they needed to get the exhaust sound right for sales reasons. So the engineers got a bunch of mufflers together and kept swapping them out, found one that was close to what they wanted, then beat broomsticks into the various openings till they got the sound right. The 'winner' was then cut open and the baffle shape/position duplicated.
