I do love the sound that my 4v mustang makes through flowmasters with an x-pipe. (although it has some funny idle qualities)
C5's always seem to have this distinctive bracka-bracka or chuffing sound (its really hard to describe) that turns me off a bit.
Another one that gets me is the sound of an inline 6 at full song.

Yeah, I would guess that Caddy was just straight pipes.
Longtube headers plus dual straight pipes.....that sound is from them not being crossed over.

Could you take an inline 4 cylinder and create an exhaust that mimicked the lengths in a subaru engine and get that distinctive subie sound in some other car?
Yes, you can. The LSJ ecotec cars had a slightly unequal header on them that made them sound like a boxer down low.
Long time back I saw an exhaust for a Jag 4.2 which was nothing more than what was called a 'brushcutter' in the day, just six straight pipes stuck out the side. IIRC there is a pic of the system but no sound on the Jaguar 'Victory by Design' DVD. The clip I saw had an amazing sound. Wish I could find that pic and a sound clip.

Not quite, but is it at least close?
All 4 cylinders should sound like my rallycar IMO:

Never gets old.
Or this BMW, because holy ballz that redline is NUTS

one of my favorite sounds is the V8 Mercedes SLS AMG that they race in the Pirelli World Challenge series.
It's kind of like a Subaru crossed with a domestic V8 but way way lower and more sinister sounding.
It almost has a 'flapping' sound. kind of unique, kind of cool. Black Swan racing and Green Hornet racing are two teams that have them.
update, here we go https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMxVV_UzSwc
you can hear how low it is at 0:27

The bmw at the 7:40 mark? Sounded like an I-6 north of 10k rpms.

Ya, I edited the video as that is the one I was thinking of

As mentioned, the "Subaru sound" is only on US-market turbo Subarus and is due to the (inefficient) unequal-length exhaust manifold. JDM and EDM STis have twin-scroll turbos with equal-length manifolds that perform better... but somehow still have a "flat-four" sound (e.g. 914) rather than regular I-4.

Probably easier to hit yourself in the head. Why in gods name would you want your car to sound like fatter VW Beetle? Some people....
This!! not to mention the fatal rod knock engineered into every STI
It's not rod knock, it's ringland crack, get it straight
I chose a good sized cam with 108° lobe separation in my SBC. The idle is fantastic, and puts a smile on my face on my daily commute. It's kind of like therapy or counseling, but I pay at the pump instead.

Unfortunately no, but that ain't bad. The brushcutter had this sorta drone/snarl but you could also pick out the individual cylinders firing on decel/accel. Man I wish I could find it, because it was a mighty fine sound.

The Roadkill Muscle Truck gets my vote
though that Caddy is nasty. (In a good way)
the Muscle Truck is the single best sounding LS engine that i have ever heard. they usually sound stupid like every other late model engine, but that thing has the nice old school unrefined "I'm gonna rip off your head and crap down your throat just for fun" kind of old school rumble to it..
I like the muscle truck sound but it sounds a little old school. I think i would tire of it. That is the un-muffled sound I'm used to with older engines.
I know i should be going chambered Im just trying to avoid the "white trash small block" sound. Its an El Camino, so the white trash is already implied.
I've listened to many unmuffled ls1s and they just sound trashy
I really like the low smooth rumble you can get from old school bb fords. I'd like to get that kind of sound from my 4.6 mustang but every aftermarket system I've heard is high pitched, brash and crackly. I'm still running factory exhaust but the tune gives it a smoother sound with a little pop on decel. Sounds good , a little more euro than american, but its not really memorable.
Properly done a straight pipe/glasspack V8 isn't that loud unless you step on it, and sounds a hell of a lot less trashy than a blowmaster.
(derail)
more displacement and ridiculous porting for the best sounds.

Tractor would be my descriptor for the subie sound.
Wish I could do much with the exhaust on my car, but the R18 has an exhaust manifold built into the head. "Headers" for it are nothing more than a down pipe that replaces the cat.
Yes, but when you bolt a turbo to that exhaust port, you have instaspool! This is why I'm swapping an R18 into my 79 civic instead of a D or K series

i never got a recording of it, but the 1 5/8" Hedman headers with 3" collectors feeding into a 2.5" Hedman X pipe and FLowmaster crossflow muffler setup on my Nova made the vortec headed/HOT cammed 355 under the hood sound pretty damn awesome... it had a slight rumble at idle but just absolutely SCREEEAAAMMED when driven in anger and the tach got twisted up past 7000rpm. it just sounded like it wanted to kill you between 3500 and 7000. i don't know how to describe the feeling when i let my cousin drive it and i got to hear/see/feel it go flying by. i got nothing but compliments on how that car sounded, and a lot of people didn't think there was any kind of mufflers under it because they didn't see them in front of the rear end where they were "supposed to be"..

Maybe they sound better setup that way, but chambered mufflers in general sound like E36 M3 to me, seem to be primarily used by tools on their E36 M3ty trucks.

IMO, a chambered muffler on a stock engine sounds terrible, but once you get those exhaust pulses pumping with a little more overlap and duration, that's when they sound great.
Found another one I really like. This one. Its a Corsa Extreme. I could probably get close with just the mufflers, but how on earth will I fit Y-body mufflers in a G-body?
I know the way to do this is listen for a truck, vette, or camaro with a sound I like and ask the owner. The problem is, there pretty rare, and if I hear it that means they are driving away from me. I found one I liked when I went to Summit a couple weeks ago on a vette. I asked the owner what it was and he just said it was on it when he bought it. Grrr. Poser.
