I did the monovision thing once with contacts, it wasn't bad until I tried to drive on the Interstate. It was so aggravating that I finally closed the 'close' eye and drove one eyed.

I have bifocal contacts, those are pretty cool. I don't wear them too much because they make my eyes more sensitive to bright lights.

I'd rather have glass as well for scratch resistance but in my case (must be my prescription) they are heavier and they can shatter if dropped and I am a clumsy oaf.

I get my scrips from Sears Optical ( Cols Ohio)

Last work "safety " glasses ( paid for by Ashland Chemical) I had to go to a " chain " eyglass store. They took three weeks@! And were made by the same factories that make the online ones. Once you get a good fit. Keep those glasses to match new ones to. ( I have one ear almost 1/2 inch lower than the other LOL)

The crafters use the cheapest labor. You an do a better fit yourself!

Been wearing glasses for a while. Not as long as some of you GEEZERS, but a while, none the less. Sam's Club for me these days. I just get plastic lenses, no scratch, no extra nothin', just gimme the lenses in my frame or their cheap frame.

Tech Tip: Never, ever, ever clean your glasses when they get nasty. Ever. Instead, when they get funky/dirty, wash your hands, rinse off the lenses, plain soap in warm water, dry on a clean, unworn T shirt or hankerchief. Do that and they will stay good a long time.

I try to hold out for a dollar. I get my glasses at Empire vision. They take whatever my insurance pays. My first pair came from Pearle and cost me $375, of which my ins reimbursed me $21.96

a bunch of people in my family use zennioptical... when i need my next pair of glasses i will... as will my wife... i wish we had something like them when i was a kid... our finaces where always tight and we had a very specific budget for my glasses... and being a typical grade/middle schooler my glasses never lasted a complete year before i'd snap a leg... or even the frames in 1/2 (i had one pair that neither legs where original... or matched) the main frame portion had snapped in 1/2 (metal legs plastic front portion)... i always had glue or tape on my glasses trying to make them last just a few more months...

i've been in contacts sence i was 12 or so... if you go that way spring for the better breathing lenses... they make a HUGE difference in comfort...

lasik is my the ultimate goal... the prices have come down so much it's amazing... i'll get to it in a few years

Even though a canoe resurrected this thread, I'll add my $.02...... I've worn glasses and/or contacts for fifty years and all have been out-of-pocket expenses.

This place http://www.zennioptical.com/# offers great prices and options with a pretty quick turn around time. I've had no issues with customer service as my orders were always based on current and acurate prescriptions. With my vision needs, their products have been well worth the few extra days dictated by an online supplier.

I'll be "looking" for new glasses in a month (or so) after my cataract procedures are complete; Zenni will be my first choice.

If we're bringing this back form the dead, I'll add Visionworks. They are a national chain (I think) and they are similar to Lenscrafters and Pearl, except they don't do 1-hour and they seem to be light on the scams. They do always have some sort of convoluted deal where you have to buy two pairs to get a discount, but the end result is always a great deal and their service has been great.

My mother had her's done 11 years ago, just had to go back for a slight adjustment in one eye.

She even offered to pay for mine at one point, but she told me her depth perception and night vision were noticeably affected after the surgery.

I'm sure plenty of people don't have that problem, but that risk is enough I'm not willing to gamble with it.

I have such bad eyes that Lasik is not an option. Accuvue contacts work great and quite comfy.

Couldn't have saud it beter myself. Parallels my experience.

glasses since the 2nd grade here. My head and nose pretty much grew around me wearing glasses 24-7 so I am stuck with them for life I think. I have indentations on my nose and behind my ears where the glasses sit, haha.

I prefer going to whatever local glasses place is around to try on a few pairs and make sure they fit me ok. Last time I got glasses, they had some sale going on that made the cost cheaper to pay out of pocket rather than using my insurance (discount didnt apply)

I have no idea if I am paying too much but glasses seem to last me at least 3-4+ years so. It was like $200 for the eye exam and new glasses and lenses with all the scratch resistant crap on it.

After wearing my glasses for over fifty years(yeah I know),I had corrective surgery done. The way my eye doc explained it, everyone has what is the beginnings of cataracts. Most insurers consider Lasik a cosmetic procedure so they don't cover it BUT cataract surgery is considered corrective and IS covered by most plans!.He implanted lenses and I walked out of the surgery being able to see and read road signs for the first time in my life! I've thrown away my glasses for over two years now- actually traded my near vision for far vision. I now buy off the rack readers to read and need nothing else. Maybe not for everyone, but for me it's been great!

Funny you should mention this... I've worn glasses for a long time and I just ordered some from WalMart. $38 a pair so I got two pair. I don't go nuts with glass lenses... too heavy and too expensive. About the time the lenses get scratched I'm itching to update my look or the frames are worn out anyway, and at $38 each its no different than buying a pair of jeans or a few shirts.

On Lasik... I had Lasik done about 10 years ago. It lasted 2 years and I had to go in and do it again. That one lasted 5 years and now I'm back in glasses. That's not Lasik's fault, its my eyes. My eyes always changed prescriptions frequently and it was no different after Lasik. They just changed. I used to be nearsighted. Now one eye is near and one is far.

I've avoided glass because my prescription has been so strong, the weight of glass would give me neck strain.

The doc reassures me that after my cataract surgery, I'll have a much weaker prescription. We'll see - pun intended.
