I usually put the entire cage together but don't glue it to the chassis, paint and detail everything then glue the completed cage on. It's a tough call between Park and McLaughlin but I would have gone with Magic Mike too. I've been a fan of his forever, his kid Max is a hell of a racer too.

For March I'll be digging out a Corvette too if were doing Sebring.

Hmmm? I just happen to have a C7-R that would fit the  theme. Add one more Corvette to March.

Oh man, so do I (sort of, it's a C5r).  The yellow paint ended up a "10 footer" at best, but maybe I'll slap on the decals and call is a day if I get time.  Sadly, I was pretty stoked about the interior.  Everything after that was a disaster.

Did the real car have white-face gauges? I have no idea. There aren't a ton of pictures available of this car from this era. I'm kinda winging it. I do like the idea of laying down gauge faces over the molded-in instrument panel, but I need to pick up some decal set first.

Today I put color on most of the chassis pieces and the underside of the body. Calling it color is kinda a misnomer since it's pretty much the exact same color as the primer underneath it. Garage was 54 degrees and the paint is behaving a lot like the dark grey I used on the '32 last month, so I'm going to have to be patient handling these things until it sets up completely. Since I have to paint the undersides of all these parts, the process is going to take twice as long. But it's only the 5th of the month, we will be fine.

Not having a dedicated model-building space is affecting things as well. I can shoot this stuff in the garage, but it's probably too cold in there to let things sit. Ideally I'll bring stuff in after dinner and let it overnight on the stovetop, but it can't stay there since there's that little thing that the stove is also used for, meal preparation. Same goes for the other parts. I do paint and glue on the kitchen table and let them rest on the stove, but at some point everything has to go back in the box until the next time. But we seem to do OK despite all that.

I too took advantage of the mild 40 degree days and laid down some primer to check my progress

Debating taking out the flange on the 1/4 windows or using glass... the 85 Daytona winner did not have glass... but the show car that year did. They ran glass in 86... and I have the decals that'll do that car too... but the front bumper is pretty different on the 86 cars.

It probably had black gauges, I don't remember seeing anyone at the time with anything else.

Sounds like we need a Corvette sub-class for the Sebring class!

That body looks much better now. They were such slick looking cars.

I got a set of Greg Sachs decals for his 86 Pontiac so I'm starting it when I get home.

Oh, that's less than ideal.

It seems like a lot of old stock car kits are like that, though. laugh

Making it tougher, cars still had individual variations back then. For example, some T-Birds had a more stock-looking squared wheelwell shape, but Dale's had fairly rounded ones. However, the body character line didn't have this suggestion of going around the wheelwell, so I'm filling that in.

However, based on an extremely faint hint of pixels along the door line in this photo, I'm thinking I will not fill in the door line. Perhaps they actually did have a hint of it present in the shape of the race car. Plus it's hard to fill in with this ancient rock hard putty I'm using.

Bodies were hand built and somewhat tailored to each type of track so a speedway car would look quite different from a short track car even from the same builder.  For a while they had to leave the door line on, I forget the year they finally gave up on it.

Ok ! Count me in! I finished this one a month or so ago. So the timing is perfect! I dont think Ned needs any introduction. This car was scratch built using aluminum mig wire shocks, masking tape seatbelts and Coke can headlight covers etc. Taking good pics is the hard part! More pics if requested! Vote for a Ford!

I didn't plan on doing any work on the Monte over the weekend but the paint I put down the other day had set up well enough to turn stuff over and shoot the other side, so that's done and out of the way. I only found one dog hair that got painted, and it's on a fairly inconsequential part, so I consider that a win.

A little glue got used, a little more detail paint got put down, then the wife came home from the grocery store so that's enough progress for the next couple days I think.

Not finding resource material for what to paint the chassis (underneath and interior) or the roll cage of the 77 Monte I'm doing (Cale Yarborough, Holly Farms). The build sheet only gives color for the exterior body work. Thoughts?

Today's rant:  Testors water based Ford Blue engine paint sucks.

I'm trying large rattle can Rust-oleum. Because why not? Finding a good variety of paint around here is getting tough. RO owns testors.

I just watched a (rather annoying) video on YT of a modeler ranting about RustOleum as a model paint. I know some of us have had problems with it, particularly drying time. He made a somewhat cogent argument against using it.

My current gripe is with bottle/brush paint but I'm pretty much off Testors from here on as it is more trouble than it's high price justifies. Tamiya is maybe 2 bucks more per spray can and so vastly superior. For body colors I'll use Tamiya because I don't need large quantities. For general primer, semi gloss black, silver and other colors I use a lot of I try to use hardware store paint. Some works well, some doesn't.

I've had some decent results with Krylon lately (small sample size), so I'm going to be trying more of those as I get the chance. It was only today that I looked it up and realized it's not the same parent company as Rustoleum. I think the similar nozzles made me assume incorrectly. Anyway Walmart and Lowes each have a selection of Krylon so it's almost as convenient to acquire.

I've heard Testors spray cans are being phased out slowly becuase Rustoleum owns them now and doesn't make enough profit off them. I'll scoop up the rare colors when possible but I'm not going to go out of my way for it. Tamiya is definitely my favorite paint, but I wish it came in big cans. I somehow used up a whole can of purple on one car and that was before I remembered to paint the mirrors.

I'm going to attempt to approximate the Wrangler colors with Krylon Gloss Sunbeam yellow and Brite Touch Ford Blue engine paint. Brite Touch is apparently a Sherwin-Williams brand (like Krylon) and they both suggest lacquer thinner to clean the tip if it's clogged, so although they may be different formulas, I'm hoping it won't go totally pear-shaped.

Some info here in the post at the bottom...seems it would have been mostly black in 77. The red cage in the pictures didn't start until after he switched to Oldsmobiles starting in 78.

A few progress photos of my off theme Ferrari 250GT SWB. It would look great in the parking lot at any Speedweeks event, especially Volusia County Speedwaysurprise Engine is from the Gunze Sangyo GTO with a scratch built air filter added. Still lots of bits to add to it. Pedals also scratch built. Wheels from Perry's Resin Cast. I stole the photo etch wires from this kit some years ago.
