Well the funny thing about ESPN is that a lot of their reporters gather their information from other sources like Fox reports who released it first. It's nice to have variety on the football and other sports aspect but I'm still bitter about Speed going away and I agree that the coverage of Conti and Grand-Am has been meh.

What I don't get is, that in Canada I am still getting Speed. I was just watching the Continental Tire Series from Kansas Speedway this afternoon. Speed didn't seem to go away up here???

Wait, all I've heard for the past decade is how much Speed sucks and Nascar sucks and all the other crappy product placement shows suck and now everyone misses it?

They lost me when WRC went away.

Fox Sports 1 had a nice variety of racing on this afternoon. Started with I think MotoCross,Off-Road racing, then Dirt Late Models from somewhere, then some NASCAR type series, and then after that it was the Continental Series and after that was something else. I can live with that if they have programming like that one or two days a week. On the down side, the kids hate it because Monster Trucks aren't on anymore.

I watched moto2 and grand am today on fox sports, Doesn't seem too bad to me

MAVtv has WRC, and is picking up a few of the shows that didn't make the transition to foxsports1. Also, FoxSports seems to have just as much racing on as before, so I fail to see an issue.

they are trying to ease the transition to all stick and ball sports all the time, unless there's a NASCAR race that they can talk about and get everything wrong..

so they are trying to be just like ESPN..

Gotta admit I have it on at 8 a.m. after my midnight shift just for some noise... cause there's nothing else on TV.

I'm glad I don't care at all about sports, though I wish there was a WRC and Formula 1 Roku channel. I'd pay for those.

I don't see what the big deal is. Speed has sucked for a while. The only thing I am disappointed about is that a friend of mine that works there lost her job.

This. When ESPN started they covered NASCAR, F1, CART, and Rallying until they could get the rights to other more important sports like one legged midget volleyball.

How does MAVtv do? Lucas bought that and promised it to be a Motorsport haven 24/7; has it happened or is it Lucas infomercials 24/7?

A post I shared on Cracked earlier today in reply to someone complaining about the Speed/FS1 switch:

Fox (who owns Speed after buying it when it was known as SpeedVision and actually, you know, good) has changed Speed to Fox Sports 1 because they wanted to go after ESPN and because they'd driven everyone away with All NASCAR, Pinks and Barrett Jackson all the time.

If they had stuck to showing actual racing, NASCAR, Grand-AM, WRC, F1, WEC, ALMS, FIA GT, V8 SuperCars, BTCC, DTM, IndyCar, NASA, SCCA, Monster Trucks, Off-Road, Isle of Man TT, AMA, MX, other types of bike racing, etc. they could have had people lining up to watch racing all day long. I know I would consider getting cable again if they did that. Instead I watch as much of it as possible on OTA HD or online via streaming.

Basically more stupid executives who think that they can do ESPN better than ESPN does. Meanwhile an entire group of people, who tend to have lots of money are alienated. I mean, why the berkeley is there an entire channel dedicated to berkeleying Golf and not Racing? If you look at the numbers, the amount of money spent by pros and amateurs are similar between the two sports and the endorsement deals, etc."

That's exactly the last time I tuned into Speed as well. If it weren't for all the weeping and gnashing of teeth, I'd never even have noticed it was disappearing.

There was an in-depth article in the WSJ a few years back discussing the behind-the-scenes debates at Speed. As I recall, they divided their viewing audience into two categories: the "Nigels" and the "Bubbas" (I'll leave it to you to figure out the distinguishing features of each). The latter group seemed to bring in a lot more advertisers. Murdoch visited soon after the acquisition and basically gave the OK to do what was necessary to make it profitable. You do the math.

After I read that article, I knew it was only a matter of time.

Sorry about that, but I include myself in there from time to time. Sad truth is, a majority of sports fans are knuckle-dragging mouthbreathers and the commentary is geared to that level.
