A shame, no matter how it happened. The Gene dying/wife suicide thing was my first thought, but the dog didn't fit the story. I guess we will find out in due time.
Get Shorty is a truly wonderful movie, and he is great in it.

Word for word what I thought. However the dog was supposedly in a crate or a closet or something
In reply to Mr_Asa :
Dog in closet, but no indication if closet door was open or closed. If open, it seems reasonable that the dog might have sought a smaller space for a sense of safety if it had consumed drugs that made it feel uncomfortable.
It gets weirder: They are now saying she appears to have been dead for much longer than him, maybe weeks more. So much she started to mummify! She was much younger than him btw (60 I believe). I am not sure I want to know what happened at this point!
Gene Hackman was one of those actors that you could almost guarantee a good movie out of. I think he was always likeable in his roles in some way. Did he ever play an unlikeable character? Even in The Firm, you end up feeling a bit sorry for him.
My mom let me go see the French connection by myself when I was like 16. Impressionable movie at that age. I have always liked Gene Hackman.

Oh, you absolutely hated Little Bill in Unforgiven. Or, at least, you were supposed to...

Oh. I thought he was supposed to be a role model?

Little Bill is a horrible person, but Hackman plays him with such charm, it's hard not to like him a little bit.
"I don't deserve this, to die like this. I was building a house!"
Based on forensics, Hackman believed to have died on the 17th, which matches the last activity on his pacemaker.

Shoulda paid extra for Energizers.
Hackman grew up in the city just down the road from my hometown. One day in the late-80s/early-90s he & his wife spent the afternoon browsing the shops. I was out of town, but a couple younger friends stalked them for a while before Gene eventually walked out & gave them autographs.
There was just a press conference about an hour ago.
Betsy Arakawa died approximately February 11th from Hantavirus, and Gene died about a week later of heart disease. He was doing very poorly and had Alzheimer's. I would imagine Betsy was his primary caretaker.
Having Alzheimer's would also explain how he lived with his wife's corpse for a week. I wouldn't be surprised if one particular cycle of "OMG my wife is dead, I need to alert the authorities!....wait, what was I doing and why do I feel so terrible?" finally gave him a heart attack.
In reply to j_tso :
Agreed, but at least there was no foul play or domestic violence involved. Just sad natural causes.

It was a great theory, but the autopsy says she died first (about a week before he died).
Uggh. 😔
In reply to Russian Warship, Go Berkeley Yourself :
It makes you wonder where she got the hantavirus from - did they have an infestation problem? I guess it doesn't really matter at this point, it was a sad ending for both of them.
In reply to stuart in mn :
The house was fine, but one or more of the outbuildings had evidence of mice, according to the press conference.
Gene Hackman wandered around the house a few days after his wife died of Hantavirus. What about the dog? Hantavirus also?
"The actor Gene Hackman died from heart disease about a week after his wife, Betsy Arakawa, died in a separate room of their New Mexico home from a virus linked to rodents, the authorities said on Friday."
In reply to 914Driver :
A week without food or water because your Alzheimer's-crippled owner forgets you need them would probably do it.
