Wait.. He shot the guy off his property?

Come to Florida. Enjoy our "Stand your ground law" As long as you have a right to be there ie: not trespassing, you have a right to defend yourself. Used to be you had to attempt to escape the sitiuation but too many victims where being shot/stabbed in the back. It's best to just expect everyone to be armed and treat them accordingly. Goes back to the old saying, treat others as you want to be treated. It's also survival of the fittest. Old man was smart and prepared to defend himself in a bad situation. Kid apparently lacked common sense. If you're gonna be dumb then you'd better be tough( or bullet proof)

Yeah, the gun owner is a completely untrained idiot then. I believe that is in direct violation of Rule #4 of guns: "Never threaten someone with a firearm." Directly descended from rule #2: "Never point a gun in the direction of something that you are not prepared to destroy."

If you're going to carry a gun to defend yourself, learn the basic rules. Do no present your weapon until you are ready to use it.

<--not a gun nut (thinks gun nuts are silly)

<--very much pro-castle doctrine

<--fine with what happened. Assault and self-defense are pretty cut and dry here, it seems. I would have LOVED to have a gun if I had awakened while my car was getting stolen last spring.

I think we're going to see more and more of this as society degrades and more and more people get sick of being victims.

Not a good idea. You would be charged. Defending yourself is one thing, defending property other than your house is another.

If I lived in Texas it would be a different story. In my actual case, even just the chance to brandish a weapon at them would be great (I know--what if they were armed).

I remember an old thread on Honda-Tech where a dude lit up some car theives with his paintball gun. That was pretty badass.

Yeah, I'm really of a mind that lethal force is only justified to protect yourself or another person from lethal or morbid force (e.g. dismemberment, crippling, rape, etc.).

Still, Im probably in the minority here. My POV is probably slightly different than most. Having had a weapon pointed at my face, by a burglar, from arms length, and then being essentially punched in the face, repeatedly, with said 9mm, and being asked each time if Im ready to die, the next person who aims at me better use that weapon, because if not, I will make them wish they had. ...never again

I'm also one who has been there - on more than one occasion. It changes you. I feel that there are 2 kinds of people, those that won't and those that will. I'm now one of those that will.

Trouble is even high schoolers carry. At least they do according to TV.

That's the story I heard.

Salanis echoed something my dad said a long time ago: 'if you ever have to pull a gun on someone you better be ready to kill them immediately'. Meaning exactly what Salanis said: you don't ever pull a gun unless you mean to use it. It ain't no toy or penis substitute.

agreed.. My dad taught me the very same thing.

Both people in this situation behaved like tool sheds and now someone is dead. To be fair.. If it moved of the old guys property, He should have known better and walked inside to get a coffee or something. My dad always taught me that it does take the bigger man to walk away.. I would have done like you did with that guy, just called the cops and let them deal with it. They are paid to do such work.

+1. That would've been the smart, responsible play. That said, I don't think the punishment was too soft. Too harsh, if anything.
