Gil De Ferran RIP

Rip young man - too early..........

Whoa... sad day.

RIP. He was one of my favorites back in the day.

Smart, versatile, excellent driver. He beat a lot of heavy hitters to win those championships. RIP, Gil. Way too young. 

Wow. In 2001, I went to my first Indy 500. My aunt's family and ours had a pool - draw names out of a hat, whatever names you got were your drivers. If you won, you won $100. I got Gil De Ferran. He led for 20-30 laps, but ultimately fell to his teammate, Helio. I'd never heard of him in 2001, but I sure became a fan that year.

I believe he won in 2003 with a broken back. I know he also raced the 500 4 times, each time with a different engine manufacturer. 
 

Far too young. Very sad indeed.
