I have decided that I need a golf cart to cruise around my neighborhood in. I want to spend about a grand, but $500 would be better. I tend to lean towards gas, since I can't rebuild electrons. Any thoughts or guidance when looking for carts?

Yep, up your budget. They seem to go for more used than most of the cars I have owned. $3k-4k seems to be the range they tend to fall in used.

Electric ones are usually a good bit cheaper and easier to find. You can usually get a well maintained retired country club cart for around $1500-$2000.

A guy down the road from my house (which is on a golf course) keeps a golf cart or two outfront of his house for sale. They range in condition and I have never stopped to look at them but the common asking prices are $1500 and $1800. They seem to turn over pretty quickly. These look like good and ready to go units.
I may stop on the way home and see what he has. I am about 3 hours from you.

I rather would have a Kei truck if just for neighborhood travel.

We use them to haul gliders around the field, without an engine they taxi like crap. I bought a Yamaha two stroke for $800, problem was it would idle faster than anyone cared to trot for 1/2 mile or so.

Poke around these sites and get an idea on makes and parts availability. Whe searching C-List et al; use Golf Car; gets better results than cart.

For that kind of money you could build your own. 8hp Briggs, basic frame, wild body panels. Won't exactly fit in at the country club, but lot's more fun.

If you really want a project, I have bits to a '67 Harley trike cart. The frame is ok, body is mostly there, rear axle is good, some wheels/tires, and springs are there. I think I even have a title. No drivetrain at all.

The price = come get the damn thing out of my yard

You might want to approach these type of guys with cash and a story, don't need a warrantee, just show me something old and cheap.
