I live on the 17th floor of my dorm building. Outside, it is about -4, and with the combined height an cold, it is very dry in my dorm room. It is getting to the point where it is slightly uncomfortable to breath at night. So I do my best to find a fix.
What do I find? A coffee maker! It works great, just put in water and no coffee and leave the lid open. Its great for the lungs, and it is also good for the two guitars and mandolin that are in the room.
Any other grassroots fixes to dryness?

Man up?
If it was just me and my roommate, we would. But we have 2 solid body instruments, and one with a solid top and laminate back and sides. Low humidity is not good for them.
take a blanket, get it wet, and hang it up.
or man up and get a small evaporative humidifier for your room like everyone i know in the dorms at my school does.
heres a hello kitty one http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=10755959
heres a page of what your local evil empire (walmart) will have available http://www.walmart.com/search/search-ng.do?search_constraint=4044&ic=48_0&search_query=humidifier&Find.x=0&Find.y=0&Find=Find
get the biggest one practical so you have to fill it less.
pan of water on a hotplate?

when i go to Sault Ste Marie MI for winter test, i put one end of a bath towel in the hotel room trash can, which is filled with water. i set this on the floor in front of the heater outlet. the other end of the towel goes over the heater vent and is held in place by my boots. water wicks up the towel and evaporates into the room.
on a 2-week trip, by the second week the hotel staff will quit disassembling it.

i find that the "do not disturb" sign does wonders for the hotel staff not jacking with your E36 M3.
Those little vaporizers like in the Walmart link above were pretty popular when I was living in the dorms. You had to make sure not to leave them on all night, though, or in the morning it would feel like you were in a jungle.
be wery careful using a coffee pot for this.
They draw a ton of juice and are meant to be run only for brief periods, a couple times a day.
Constant or continual use may be a fire hazard.
I like the wet towel/ blanket in front of the heated air.
I use an Aprilaire to keep the cats from igniting stuff with their noses

Technically, I'm not allowed to have anything that produces heat. But I couldn't go without coffee, so I snuck one in. And it does a good job as a humidifier too, when I have no other options.
that towel idea is brilliant. I will use that on the next business trip
